Facebook won't let me change my privacy settings

I've been going through my fb page today and editing bits. When I clicked to see what my timeline looks like to other people things came up which I thought were private. I like everything on my page to be completely hidden to the public and so I though I set everything to friends only. There's nothing on there that I mind people seeing, just don't want to share my life with the world! It's mostly things like cover photos and profile pics that still show up.
I went into the privacy settings to change it, and the page won't load. I just get the footer. The same thing happens to account settings. When I go onto the activity log it won't allow me to change anything from public to friends only.
Any ideas on how I can fix this?
