A staycation is a vacation within the country where you book a nice little hotel for a couple of days where you both can travel to nearby local attractions and so on It can be really fun and economical and is different compared to the conventional physical gifts like shirts or whatever.

    1. Get to know him enough you have at least a vague idea of what he likes, what his passions are, his dreams etc.

    2. Get him something related to the above.

    3. If all else fails just get him something that comes from the heart, that required a little bit of thought.

    4. Success!

I don't really care for football and I think betting is a mugs way of losing their money but that's just me.

You say he loves football..possible you could get tickets for a match or something but I'm not sure if you have to get them in advance and they might be really expensive. Since your going away you could just do something at home e.g. get some food in or make something and then I don't know watch a movie or something. He might also want a gift though which could possibly be a cake? You could put some decorations up ..Not sure don't know if he would really appreciate that type of stuff or be like 'uhh is that it " Alternatively you could take him to his favorite restaurant, maybe you could get him some new football boots if he plays and his old ones aren't so good. It might be easier to get quite a few small gifts of all the different things he like rather than one massive gift.

    There's a few ideas there>> http://www.red5.co.uk/birthday-gifts.aspx

    What about a book?

It's not much, but at least it makes up part of a present.
