Who cares about the world cup?

It's 2006. England - no - the WORLD has gone mad. It seems. The football world cup is in full swing, but does anyone else here actually NOT GIVE ONE?

I couldn't give a monkey's testicle about the world cup! (Not that i actually have one...). Yet everyone else seems to. [EDIT - i meant everyone else seems to care, not everyone else has a monkey's testicle. Whoops.]

Anyone else out there feel the same way?

You can't deny that it is exciting when you're in a room full of people all crowded around the TV, and the ball flies off an England player and into the back of the opponent's net. It's not so much about the football - it's more about the experience and all cheering for and supporting the same thing. In normal life, we're all fighting for different things and living individual lifestyles.

You only have to go to the pub when an England match is on to feel the buzz of everyone all willing for the same thing.
Smug attitudes like that are much more annoying than any football fan.

"ROFL FOOTBALL SUX LOOK HOW STUPID YOU SHEEP ARE ...I'M SO SMART FIGHT THE POWER" is not funny or clever. and you'll just come off as a ****** You don't like football? Fine. But trolling sports fans and acting like some pretentious dimwit won't make anyone think you're somehow cool and smart because you're snooty to something that 5 billion people in the world enjoy. No-one except some Star Wars nerds will think you're cool because you rage against the football machine. I'm not necessarily aiming it at just you, but at anyone who thinks this lame-as-funk 'rebelling' makes them Che Guevara.

sorry, but it's hardly rebelling, it's just pointing out that there's a ****load of hype over a sports competition which we aren't even interested in and that we get reactions like yours everytime we say this.
i hate the fact that the whole world has to change because of 90 minutes, it's stupid to think that footballers are also paid the earth for kicking a ball around.

I see your point about the social aspect - going to the pub and all pointing yourselves towards the same thing...

However, when you get england flags hanging out of every hang-outable thing there is, it just looks over the top. Walk into Tesco, you're immediately hit by this wall of England-ness.

I don't mean to disrespect football, or genuine football fans in any way - nothing wrong with having something to support.

But most people don't - advertisers and - it seems - the whole world shoves it in your face and just expects you to go wild about the world cup, just because you're from england and it's the "national" sport.

5 billion people? I don't even think there are 5 billion people in the world who know what football is...

I think it's a great excuse to spend all day in the pub :biggrin:

I've watched all five games so far (including the german game in the local German consulate with free bier and brotwurst) and the atmosphere has been great. I'm not a huge football fan but the last 36 or so hours have been alcohol fuelled fun.

Pity I still have exam resits to work for :frown:

But it's all just a bit of excitement, a bit of fun, a bit of life. Tescos, and the rest of the UK, would be a very boring place otherwise. Well, I think it would be boring anyway. I quite like the excitement, and it's something to laugh about.

 At one of the pubs in town they have a huge screen outside in the beer garden. The atmosphere today during the England match was awesome! People cheering, dancing around, wearing ridiculously oversized England hats...and all in the sun! Such a good day
Don't particularly enjoy football would rather play it on the comp with mates lol, prefer xgames n gravity games. Guess everyone has different tastes. I find it strange how people suddenly become patriotic.
