OCD? Fear of being left alone

I'm not sure if my friend has a problem but I'm sure it stems from pyschological roots. When she was around 7 or 8, she taught herself to write with the other hand (left because she's right-handed). That proved to be a bit too difficult so after a year or two, she taught herself to read upside down and would do this with every page she read.

Her reason for this behaviour: she didn't want the other hand to be left out and wanted the page to be read equally both sides.

This phase got over and now she's obsessed with the same thing when it comes to food. For example, if there's a chip left on someone's plate after they're done eating, she begs them to cut it in half. She does it with everything and it appears to bother her (to quite an extent) if ''it's left on it's own''.

Is there anyone else who does this? Why would she do this? She thinks its her fear of being left alone. Anyone else have any ideas?
Definately sounds like OCD. There's no real cue as such, but with therapy, it can be controlled, and/or reduced significantly. There was a guy at school with really bad OCD, but he's managed to get over it quite a lot. He says sometimes things still bother him, but he can control it, and not worry/have to change it to how it 'should' be.

The equivalence is relatively common (people who don't have OCD still do it), but I'm not so sure about the being left alone part... She should consult her GP if she's worried, and you can help her by doing anything you can to support her.

hmm i would suggest getting her to see her gp! it sounds like ocd to me (www.stuckinadoorway.co.uk >>ocd support group with lots of stories and ppl to ask etc) maybe her fear of being left alone (Stress) trigger her ocd and she uses this *compulsion* to gain some control over her environment and avoid her fear...just a thought! good luck!! xXx
This is OCD, therapy doesn't usually work. Tell her to buy mindsoothe remedy. It works for ocd.

Okay, first of all Batman therapy CAN work with certain individuals; each OCD sufferer is completely unique and reacts differently to different treatment. There are after all a variety of techniques out there for sufferers to use (ie. aversion therapy/drugs/cognitive behavioural therapy).

To the first poster, your friend definitely sounds like an OCD sufferer. My experience of it comes from a very close friend of mine. He's seemed, well I don't want to use the word 'normal' but without symptoms of OCD for a majority of his childhood. After being severely bullied as a teen he developed the 'hand-washing' OCD during his A-S levels. Honestly, the guy's a wreck - he won't go and seek help and every time I try and take him out or introduce him to new people he'll spend a good ten minutes washing his hands to try and calm himself down.

Anyway, I think the best thing you can do for your friend is try and persuade her - if she hasn't already - to discuss her problem and go and seek help. There are a variety of treatments/resources avaliable to her and in the long run it WILL help her. As a friend, I know how difficult it can be to see someone you care about with OCD - I would suggest doing some reading up about the illness, it'll just give you more understanding of what's going on.

It does sound strange , hopefully something can be done to improve it!!
It can. Follow the links given by the people above, and I'm sure they can give you better advice than we can.
I think you need to rent out Home alone 1 & 2. Don't rent the third one because it was kind of sheht. It'll give you some tips for when you're scared.

What makes you so sure I didn't put those asterix in myself, since I already know how the censorship filter works?

Please say you didn't.

That would make you very sad, indeed. Go and log out and throw your computer out the window.
Make me, biatch.
A sexual relationship with this girl would prove very enjoyable; she'd do things twice, and from different angles, and with each hand.

I'm the same. If there are two chips left on my plate, I have to eat them both together so one isn't left over. Same with most things, there must be at least two things together. I work in a shop and am quite anal about things like coins being left 'on their own'. Of course I understand that they're coins, they don't have feelings y'know? I'm not sure what it is, i just don't like it left like that. I don't think its a severe case of OCD. Everyone has things they do a lot of the time like that, its probably just a mild form of OCD.

meh im a bit like that. For example, if my friend prods one arm, I INSIST she prods the other, in the same way. So my friends just dont really go near me anymore :P
