Under the ''Notice to Candidates'' that we have been given, representing all the exam boards, it says under section A - regulations that ''you must not use correcting fluid/ correcting pens, highlighters or gel pens on your answer paper''. This applies to all exam boards.

Hope this helps clear things up.

Reply 3

i used gel pens for all my AS/A2 exams and GCSE.

Reply 4

Meh maybe they have caught onto the fact that gel pens are quicker to write with?
Don't you think they are quicker than biros. I usually use a fountain and apparently fountains are slower than biros.

Let the great pen debate commence!

Reply 5

Well you know the rules so no excuses  There is not a difference between pens in terms of writing speed if they are well maintained.

I think the problem is more people writing in red gel pen than anything else (makes it hard or in the case of online marking impossible to mark). There isnt really any difference in appearance between gel pen writing and fountain pen writing.

Reply 15

I was going to say its really harsh if they refuse to mark it if it's in gel pen, can you really tell. I still think gel pens are quicker to write with though, mayb its psychological as they appear to glide more smoothly accross the paper.... like silk hehe

Reply 16

Quite a few exams are now marked online so using gel-pens makes it hard for examiners to read what you've put....although I'm sure that theres some examiners who'll mark normally i.e. actually having your script there in full and physically marking it for the people who didnt know/didnt listen to the rules about gel pens. I doubt they'd absolutely point-blank refuse to mark your work though.

Reply 17

Doesnt answer my question though - exactly why are gel pens harder to mark than any other kind of pen?

Reply 18

Apparantly the computers can't read them. But most papers aren't marked electronically anyway so I don't see why its a problem! I used gel pen in my AS French (we hadn't been given the notice then) but had to use stupid biro for the rest.

This may sound like a psectacularly dim question but what is classed as a gel pen? Becasue you can j=get those ones which write like fountain pens but are gel pens really sort of thing... oh, I know what I mean!

I'll be quiet
