What is wrong with people these days? Why would people rather sit indoors on some unrealistic excuse for a bike and get bored out of their mind when you can go outside, and cycle for real, enjoy the outdoors and get much more excersize done because apart from anything, there is no chance that you are going to use that thing for 3 hours at a time.

Well said Titanium! Get a real bike ffs.

You Lost. End of.

what about when its icy or pissing it down?
OP: you will know yourself when its time to stop but it depends realy on what your doing the excercise for. to loose fat, increse fitness, maintain fitness, etc.

Rain does not stop me from cycling, i just wear water proofs when it rains. As for ice, it is summer now so no ice and as for winter, in England there are very very few days that are un'cycleable, ice has never stoped me because there isnt much of it here, only gail force winds will keep me off my bike.

Even if there are some days in winter that you can not cycle, its no big deal, you can still cycle most of the time even in winter.

Some people enjoy cycling in the comfort of their own home, especially those who are conscious of the way they look - exercising inside is a way of increasing fitness without damaging esteem to those that can be sensitive, especially those who are quite overweight. Also, not everybody lives in an area where there are good places to ride - in built up areas it would be hard to have a continuous cycle without stopping at traffic lights etc!

Have you ever tryed to cycle on an excersize bike in the summer? you dont have the air cooling you down because oyu are stationary, you overheat so much, i have used excersize bikes on a ahndfull of occasions, and i have also cycled regularly for 4 and half years and from my experince i can say i have never got a good work out on an excersize bike, and apart from the fact that it does not feel natural, i cycle for 2 and a half hours at a time sometimes even over 5 hours, but on an excersize bike, you would drive yourself crazy it is so boring.

Would you belive that once i even tryed to read a book whilst using an excersize bike!

Oh and i dont have any cool crash stories from excersize bikes to tell my freinds about

I second that lovelee-jublee. I have an exercise bike which i use regularly and really enjoy it. I find it is less expensive and inconvenient than trekking 10 miles to the local gym every time i want to use specialist equipment to work out. While i agree that experiencing the great outdoors whilst exercising is very important, i also think that feeling confident and safe is of equal importance.

That is your personal preference... who cares what you enjoy, we're talking about the OP - if they want to ride an EXERCISE bike then that's their choice - who are you to tell them otherwise?

If you get too hot riding an EXERCISE bike indoors, you can always have a fan next door to you, and if you find it boring, you can have the telly on in front of you or listen to music or get a story tape to listen to, etc etc. There are plenty of ways to stop yourself getting bored. and frankly, an EXERCISE bike is safer than riding outside because there aren't any risks of cars, buses etc.

I hope you've learned how to spell EXERCISE now, and also learned that other people have different preferences to yours.

Thank you  Not everyone enjoys riding in front of people in public - I know that bike seats aren't the most flattering, so surely people can understand why people would want to do it in the comfort and privacy of their own home!

I dont think you can argue about the benefit of cycleing for real, I can cycle 90km offroad in 5 hours 30min, i have a resting hear rate of 52bpm at best and despite the fact i do no regular running, i can run much longer distances then my freinds some of who have raced in the county athletics championships, simply due to my stamina from cycling.

I find it hard to belive that any of you excersize bike users could come any where close to this.

To be honest with you, I couldn't give a monkeys what you can cycle, what your HR is, how much stamina you have, what you eat for breakfast, blah dee blah, and I don't really think anyone else does. Who gives a s**t?! The OP doesn't want to know how good you are, they wanted a training plan for an EXERCISE bike, not your life story, and certainly not to be told that they shouldn't use it. If they want to use their exercise bike, let them. It's a lot better than nothing for sure.

Cycling outside is extremly safe, in 4 and a half years iv had maybe 15 or more crahses (keep in mind i cycle offroad hence the seemingly high number) but the worst injury i got was an extremly bruised ankle that ment i could not walk for 2 days. If that is the worst that happened in 4 and a half years, i hardly consider that dangerous!

lol, this thread's developed nicely. I'm still with Titanium, my resting heartrate is 58bpm, I can do 80 miles onroad in 4 hours, all down to cycling for real not on a static bike. It is so much more interesting and exciting than sitting in your living room with the tv on. However i accept that some people might want to do it indoors due to traffic etc.

you cant really say that people who ride bikes outside are going to have more stamina than those who ride exercise bikes indoors. After all, either way its a bike thats being rode and so surely the effects would be the same. the resistance on an exercise bike can be increased and decreased to mimic the hills outside and so really, there is no added benefit to stamina of cycling outdoors. Also, exercise bikes are better for those on special training programmes as you can record calories burned, distance cycled etc and follow specialised training programmes which you cannot do as accurately on a bike outside. also, if you get hot on an exercise bike, couldnt you just open a window?

P.S. i dont appreciate your language, i dont agree with you, but you dont see me swearing at you constantly.

Oh for goodness sake, stop telling us about yourself, I don't care!!!

You've had 15 crashes - on an exercise bike you won't have any, so there's no way it can be more dangerous than cycling outside! The fact that people get killed on their bikes everyday for various reasons, including the fact that cars don't see them, is very clear that cycling outside can be dangerous - you're obviously a safe cyclist, or maybe just lucky, but these incidents do happen. I really don't know what you are trying to prove. You enjoy cycling outside, then go off and do it.
