    Suggest why the Polymer

    [-O-CH2-CH=CH-CH2-O-CO-CH2-CO-]

    (MADE FROM : Cl-CO-CH2-CO-Cl AND HOCH2-CH=CH-CH2-OH )

    would not be suitable for use in strongly alkaline or acidic solution?

    ::: has it got any thing to do with alkaline hydrolysis?!?!:confused:

    just to expand, esters are hydrolysed by H+ or -OH to give an alcohol and a carboxylic acid (H+ hydrolysis) or an alcohol and a carboxylate (-OH hydrolysis), regardless of whether an acid chloride or a carboxylic acid was used to form the ester. (hydrolysis replaces water, but won't put Cl back into molecules).

    i don't think [-O-CH2-CH=CH-CH2-O-CO-CH2-CO-] is a polymer...unless u got the C=C double bond by mistake... but other than that, yeh, i agree that it would get hydrolysed back to the 2 monomers.

    it IS a polymer, they can have c=c in them, as they're formed by esterification, not a free radical mechanism, so the C=C stays intact. and you don't get the original monomers.
