Age? No Claims? Registration year of the vehicle?

Depends where exactly in Manchester - each postcode has a rating which determines the theft risk, etc. £1800 sounds about right for a young driver with no NCB.

I'm sure theres a search on the net somewhere that you can check the category of your postcode - not that you can do much about it if it is in a bad band.

Have you actually bought the car? If its proving to be too expensive perhaps you should consider a different car (assuming you havent already got the car, obviously!)

Search www.moneysupermarket.com for the cheapest quote. Barclays are doing a great offer at the moment with trying to match prices but 9 times out of 10 they come out cheapest by quite a way anyway.

According to this, Manchester is one of the most expensive places to insure a car: http://money.uk.msn.com/Specials/Your_Car/Article.aspx?cp-documentid=145406

Edit: just tried that money supermarket website - the cheapest quote on my car is £1500! I pay £800!

Isn't that only if you're over 25? The £50 offer is because I had a leaflet which stated the age restriction, not sure about the price matching though.

I got the insurer Quinn Direct off confused.com, i'm only 18 and I paid around £1100 for third party, fire & theft for my Peugeot 306...

Ah, quite possibly. They may come out cheaper anyway? They came out at £200 cheaper on my Bug.

anyone found these cars despite the small engine expensive to insure? i only seem to be able to find a quote at about 1,800 for 3rd party

anyone know any cheap insurers to insure such a car

p.s is manchester a higher risk area in comparisonment to birmingham?

TIA

This source would suggest the midlands (birmingham) being at higher risk.
http://insurance.excite.co.uk/special/premiums_for_londoners

There is a full chart for the country but cannot find it.
As far as I'm aware, they band them into categories of A-F, with F being highest. F appears in London quite a few times, but mostly appears in affluent areas rather than poverty districts. A does not appear in London!

My area is if IIRC an E in NW London or an F in W1. Chart contradicts this though by stating Westminster gets it best which I can't believe

Must be very similar. I have a 12 yr old 1.4cl polo but I've only got 3rd party for just over £400. (I added my parents onto my insurance and that reduced it lol)

Then again, I'm a girl  :p:

Same. My area is A or B .. dunno what the different numbers represent though

That insurance group link is interesting ... my 1.1 Saxo is insurance group 4 yet a 1.2 Corsa Sxi (2000-2004) is in group 3 apparently!
