Birkbeck Freshers 2013

I'm Rebeca (or Rebecca in its anglicized form) and I have accepted my unconditional offer for the three year full-time Law LLB. Because I'm not from England, I'll be moving into the intercollegiate halls on the 23rd of September and I don't even know if the SU is organizing a Freshers week exclusively for Birkbeck undergraduates or it is more of a joint thing with the rest of UoL colleges/universities? I know ULU (University of London Union) organizes a freshers week for all undergrads (and occasional postgrads who like to join the fun  ).

Also, I was wondering if any of you would like to join me for the ULU freshers week fare, which will be followed by the opening party. Dates are still TBA, but it is likely it will be Friday, the 27th at the main ULU building. So if you want to meet-up, please tell me and I'll add your name to the list, which I will be editing as more people join in

I am trying to organize a gathering of Birkbeck undegraduate students starting this October and have the opportunity of knowing each other before we start. If you happen to run a Tumblr blog or you have Facebook/Twitter and you are interested (or you know people going to Birkbeck who are also interested but don't have an account at TSR) in joining me, then send me a PM. I haven't decided where the meeting point will be, but as there will be course inductions going on, I was thinking somewhere next to Birkbeck's main entrance.

Hey, nice to meet you!
I'm not quite a fresher (will be starting from 2nd year of my degree, although it will be my first year studying at birkbeck), but would be great to meet up and have a look around with you  Can you let me know dates when you have them? Not sure I'll receive them as I'm not starting from 1st year.

Sure, as they say, the more the merrier! Besides, just because you're starting from your 2nd year it doesn't necessarily mean you are excluded from enjoying freshers. Also, by all means you're still a fresher because it is your first year at Birkbeck

So far it has been confirmed that the ULU Freshers will start on Friday 27th of September at 12:00.

Thanks! I actually emailed my course administrator to ask and she said I should be receiving my induction info soon as I'm starting for the first time at birkbeck, regardless of entry point.

Have you enrolled and got your student info up online yet? I've enrolled but as yet my modules and timetable aren't up yet, and nothing on moodle, are yours?

I was also thinking about emailing my course administrator to ask about induction and freshers, but I think it is a better idea to wait until next week because honestly, they are going to be pretty busy with the A-Level/Clearing/Adjustment peeps and it is likely they will only be able to answer by then.

Yep, I have already enrolled! However neither my modules or my timetable are available on moodle, so I am getting a bit worried over that (although I might be overreacting). By the way, I am doing Law so I don't know if they are going to release the module options the same day as yours or they are actually post it later on.

I'm an "established" Birkbeck student (just finished second year) so first of all do not panic about your timetable being empty. BBK often operates on a "last minute" basis when it comes to admin so your info will appear - but it might not be for a while yet!

The student fayre will be 16 to 19 September. However, I would say that based on the previous two years don't expect anything too big - it's pretty much just the various societies advertising themselves. Details will be on http://www.birkbeckunion.org/

If you have any questions at all about studying at Birkbeck I will do my best to answer. I'm a psychology student but have studied modules in other disciplines at BBK too.

Hey folks
This sounds like a great idea! I am going to be starting an MA in archaeological practice and this sounds like a great way to kick off the new year. Am totally up for the freshers fare and also any gatherings - although I've just noticed in your original post that you are looking 2 organise something for undergraduates... I'm doing a post grad, but if you wouldn't mind I would love 2 get involved? :-) Am the grand old age of 29(!) - I was attracted to Birkbeck because of the diversity of ages and backgrounds of people on the courses... getting excited now!

All the best

My email address is on my profile on here, or PM me for it.

Birkbeck freshers is on 16 - 19 September, which I'm going to. I can't meet up on 27th Sept as I'm abroad then I come back 30th Sept!

Have you logged into Moodle yet and seen the module guides? They have the assessment dates and seminar stuff all on there... I printed it all already... I'm super keen to get started haha!

Oddly enough, I am also 19 but starting from Year 1 (to make things short, I did my IB exams last year, got pretty good grades and managed to get into my firm, which was PPE at Royal Holloway, however I had a change of heart and I came to realize that it wasn't what suited me the best. So, because I wanted something different, I switched to Law and literally felt in love with Birkbeck, even though it isn't the most common choice. And here I am). And also, come and join in. As I say before, the more the merrier and whether you are a undergrad student or a MA one, freshers is meant to be for everyone

Beforehand, thanks a lot for offering to help us, the poor innocent 1st year souls  But I guess most universities tend to take some time to upload their timetables, so I can't really fault Birkbeck for that. Sadly, I am unable to attend the student fayre on the 16-19, as I am actually moving on Monday, the 23rd. But if you want to join us for Freshers, then you are more than welcomed to do so.

I always like to say that age is purely a state of mind and my plan was to make the meet-up as open as possible so of course you are invited. And nah, if there's something that makes Birkbeck truly unique is that allows anyone to join the university experience! Besides, if I might say so, MA students starting at Birkbeck are also Freshers.

Another Law student! I swear that for some reason we always end attracting each other. I am going for the full time, and from what I have seen so far, I think it is 4 days per week plus tutorials on Monday's.

And of course, I'll love to add you on Facebook. It is always great to start knowing some people before uni.

Sadly, I won't be able to arrive in time for Birkbeck freshers as I am flying from Spain on the 23rd of September (which is a Monday, I think) with my sister who's also heading to Oxford to study their BA (Jurisprudence) in Law. But I would have loved to have the chance of doing so. Furthermore, I will probably be staying in the Intercollegiate Halls (probably College Hall, so if any of you is staying there please tell me)

Yep, I have logged on Moodle, plus I have already enrolled so all is sorted. However I am getting a bit worried about the fact that I can only see the module guide for Legal Methods and Legal Systems, which means that a) my computer is messed up or b) they'll will upload them later. Who knows really ;D

About the Freshers meet-up, I have posted about it on the Birkbeck Freshers page (scroll down and when you see a Rebecca María Martinez, that's me) so please join in and start confirming whether you are coming or not as I need to start organizing the meet-up. So far, I am planing on meeting right after induction (at 4:30, as it will start at 5) in front of the Malet Street building, which happens to be next to ULU. Also, PM me if you want my mobile number in the UK to confirm it.

Hi, i'm Matt, i will be starting my first year in october, im studying philosophy so im just looking to meet a few people who are doing the same. i'm not really too sure how this site works but anyone who's looking to make a few new friends before we start study, hit me up. I dont want to turn up day one not knowing a single person. also, the freshers week thing is confusing me a little too. are we having one or are birkbeck just piggy backing on to ULU's? hope to hear from a bunch of you soon

Birkbeck have their own Fresher's Fair. But, as Birkbeck is part of the University of London, you can also go to the ULU Fresher's Fair and events and join their Student Union too to access their events / facilities.

I'm joining Birkbeck too! Really nervous and I don't think I'll make any friends there. What is Birkbeck like? Are people friendly? And I'm quite confused about this Birkbeck Freshers event.

What course will you be studying?

Hey,

I'll be entering first year in October to study Linguistics and Spanish, quite nervous as don't know anyone at all at the Uni! Anyone else studying languages too? I'll be living at home still so must probably won't make friends as easily as those living in halls but it would be cool to get to know people!!

Hi Sophie, I'll be starting first year full time linguistics with French, so at least there's 2 of us! lol
I'm studying development studies. I really want to attend the freshers fair but I'm not sure which one I should attend. What the social life like at birkbeck? Since the classes are in the evening, is there even time to socialize?

Posted from TSR Mobile

Socialising at Birkbeck is a bit weird and will all depend on the luck of the draw with who is in your class.

I've had class groups who are happy to go to the SU Bar after class every week, some once in a while, some just after the last class and some classes where nobody really talks to each other at all.

As for the Fresher's Fair. The Birkbeck one will take you about 20 minutes (if that) to go round so I definitely advise you go to both!

To clarify things a little: the meeting point is going to be on Birkbeck's Malet Street building (outside the mybirkbeck helpdesk) which is right next door to the entrance of the ULU building at 4:45 on the 27th.
