Summer Diet - What am I Doing Wrong?

Hi guys i am wondering if you can help - i am going on holiday with all my girly friends and i don't wan't to be the fat one - i really want to be able to swap clothes and stuff without being embarrased that its too tight or doesn't do up at all - heres the deal at the moment i am 10st and about 5ft7 and a size 12:

What i eat:
Breakfast: Mix of Muslei and Coco Pops with skimmed Milk
Main Meal: Something like: 2 Wholemeal pitta breads, 3 slices of cheese, salad / Mushroom Omlette and Salad. / Cheese and Mushroom Panini and Salad/ Egg and Potato Salad / Pasta with tomato sauce / Pasta with Pesto / Beans on toast/ Jacket Potato with beans and Salad.
Snacks: Grapes / slice of Melon / apple / handfull of cereal / toast if very hungary.

( i am a vegetarrian btw)

Is this o.k. I never eat more than 2 meals a day really - don't give me a guilt trip, i'm often not hungary espically when it is hot.

Sport: Everyday either Run 2-5km dependant on weather / Swim - training session with school club. then 2x a week gym with weights and press ups, sit ups etc.

The problem is that i am not loosing any weight, and i remain a size 12. When i did lose some weight - about a stone last 2 months ( from 11 to 10) i havent changed measurements really at all so it was probably water or something!

Please help as i am not really sure what to do- but am commited to try anything

sorry about the long post and thanks for any advice

to be honest, because you are at the right weight for your height at the moment, its probably going to take time before you really start to see any change in your weight. When you start a diet, you lose more depending on how overweight you are to begin with and seeing as you arent overweight, its going to take longer for you to see even a little change. Your diet sounds healthy although maybe getting in another, smaller meal would help but thats up to you. you also seem to get regular exercise so thats not a problem. I do know how you feel going on holiday with all your girlfriends - im exactly the same but you have just got to remember that deep down even the skinniest, prettiest one will be worring about be the 'fat' one in the group too. Keep doing what you are doing because you have a good, healthy lifestyle and so you will maintain your healthy weight. Hope you enjoy your holiday! xx

Eating too much, WEIGH your food and check your portion sizes.

Reply 3

eat more smaller meals. 5 or six a day. also drink lots of water.

Reply 4

You look great the way you are.

Reply 5

Drink a glass of water a few minutes before every meal? You'll feel less hungry and eat less.

Smaller portions? Due to evolution ('humans' used to not get regular meals so needed to stock up when they could eat etc.), your body doesn't register that it is no longer hungry until after you've eaten more than you need.

Coco pops - cut that out as it's chocolate.
Cheese - very fatening
Muesli - it's made of nuts. Nuts have a lot of calories, and need to be eaten rarely.

Nuts definitely have a bunch of calories, but they're also great protein, especially if you're a vegetarian. They don't necessarily have to be eaten rarely, but if you're going to eat them, the key is to do so in moderation

I would personally suggest Weetabix instead of muesli, no coco pops, no cheese, less pasta. Yep it sounds cruel but if you're already in the normal weight range then it's really difficult to lose weight. Maybe last month you lost weight in your arms and legs, therefore your measurements didn't change. I know that I lose weight from my arms, boobs and legs first, therefore my measurements stay nearly the same too. Females are designed to store fat in their hips so it's really difficult to reduce them. Keep up with the exercise tho!

She's in the normal weight range, and therefore if she wants to cut more weight, she needs to cut down on anything that has calories. She can get her protein from beans, which are low in calories and high in protein.

If you really want to lose weight, maybe follow something like Weight Watchers? It's not necessarily a program for losing weight, just watching what you eat by controlling your portion sizes etc. I don't really think you need to lose weight though- 5ft7 and 10st seems exactly right to me.

Thanks guys, what about special K instead of cocopops/muslei - is that better?
Also for losing fat is it better to do cardio at a really high intesity for as long as possible or mid intensity for even longer?

Reply 12

Special K may be low in fat but it has heaps of sugar = calories. Weetix is yummo - put some berries on the top.

I noticed a hell of a lots of carbs in what you say you're eating. No good if you want to lose weight, but you need to balance it with exercise.

Reply 14

on the carb thing, what would you suggest instead - i'm really not very good with this whols "balance", what would i have instead of say pasta... - will be getting some weetabix too lol

As a trainee dietitian, i would suggest cutting high fat products out e.g cheese. Reduce portion sizes so have 1 pitta not 2. Fast weight loss tends to be water, not fat, so slow loss is the key. Try aiming for 1-2lb a week for sustainable weight loss.

You would be better having 3 small meals a day instead of 2 larger ones. Like everytthing that has been said before cut calories, i think your carbs are fine. You need to aim for a diet 60% carbs, 15% fat, 25% protein. Alcohol also has lots of calories since it can be used as an energy source directly (plus it also contains sugar), so cut that out where you can. If you want to cut your carbs, just try smaller portions of pasta, and try eating more vegetables/salad instead. I don't know if that helps, but it is what the NHS currently reccommend. Your diet is actually really good, and your weight is normal.

Well you should start by eating a healthy breakfast. Don't just always eat cereal, mix it up a bit. Have a fruit salad, or some yogurt or something.

Have lunch, but you could always have something like a salad, (rocket with feta cheese and vinigrette is one of my favorites, or even make it sweet with vegetables like peppers. You can get loads of recipes off the net) a low fat soup (try making your own, it's really simple) a sandwich with wholemeal bread, etc.

Snack on fruit, dried fruit and nuts. As a veggie you need to get as much protein and as many vitamins as possible.

Have something like stuffed vegetables, cous cous, tofu, veggie burgers, etc for dinner.

You're probably feeling too full up at the minute as you're stacking up on carbs. Try to make a balance through 3 healthy meals a day.

I would just suggest that it could be your portion sizes, as a vegetarian myself I would say that you shouldn't cut out cheese completely as it's a good source of protein, I myself eat half-fat cheese where possible. Don't eat too much muesli, people think it's healthy (it's full of fibre) but because it has nuts in it it's loaded with calories. How big are your bowls of cereal? I would say your diet was relatively similar to mine but I'm a size 8. Are you sure that your fat? muscle weighs twice as much as fat and if you 5'7 then the chances are that you may have wider hips than me which would make you a bigger frame and so a bigger size even if you were skin and bones. If you want to lose weight then that's fair enough but only do it if it's actually neccessary. Really funny question, but do you have quite big feet? they are usually in proportion to your general frame, if your feet are big chances are that your hips will be wider and you'll be a bigger size, this doesn't mean your covered in lardxx

Reply 18

If you had any fat it's probably just turned into muscle which is heavier which it why you don't seem to be losing weight. Doesn't seem like your doing anything wrong really.

Is having a peanut butter sandwich ever now and again okay?
