The Student Room Group

Some advice from a first year student!

Hey!

So some of you may be feeling really nervous, worried or excited to start Uni in September, it's such a strange thing realising that you're finally growing up and becoming an adult (after all the wishing when we were kids).

Just to keep this short and sweet, I have a few tips for you incoming Freshers. I hope they'll be helpful and these are from my personal experience as I have just finished my first year

1) Definitely bring a door stop and prop your door open during Freshers week. This invites your other flatmates to mingle and have a chat with you.

2) If you have people on your course living in your flat make sure you aim to socialise with everyone in your flat and not stick to your course mates. This was a lesson learnt from my flatmates who restricted herself during freshers.

3) Visit Freshers Fare!!! Everyone goes on about it but it's defo worth checking out, also this is where you join your clubs and societies.

4) Don't worry about not fitting in. Remember your all in the same boat so just introduce yourself, make some friends and have a good time!

5) Be wise with your student loan and don't let yourself get carried away when checking your balance and AVOID taking out an overdraft (unless you really need it)!

6) Make sure you find the balance between social time and study time before things get too late

7) Most importantly ENJOY your Freshers week to the MAX because once it's over it really is over

I second this very good advice  but add:

8) even if your 1st year doesn't count to your degree, if you get too far behind then catching up can be difficult.

9) HAVE FUN

This. And where you get far too much free crap, and pizza...

10) Don't go mad and buy all of the books off your reading list before you even get there. You'll find you won't use them all, or that you can take certain ones out of the library for a long period of time.

Good Advice! Unless you're library does not have enough copies then buy them, otherwise don't bother

Great advice, but to go off topic:

YOU HAVE XKCD IN YOUR SIG

YOU HAVE XKCD IN YOUR SIG

I think I'm in love.

Oh, and to be a geek and add my own favourite line:
"Instead of office chair, package contained bobcat. Would not buy again."

I do indeed have XKCD in my sig  it's nice to be appreciated  I save it up for exam time and then go through all of them

Hehe, how long did you take exploring click and drag? (1110)

True. I found that i could keep the maths for chemists book i needed this year on loan for the entire academic year. Took it out in october, returned it before I left in June, just kept renewing it. I know I'll be able to save myself £50 this year, because a organic chemistry textbook I want, there's 5 copies in the library, AND it's not a set textbook. On the other hand I found that keeping the chemistry primers for more than a week is generally a nightmare.

It was my main procrastination tool during study leave. I managed to get my friends hooked.

Click and drag? Far too long for my own good. I spent about half an hour mired in the underground tunnels.

Congratulations :-P it is a great procrastination tool - especially now that 9gag is just a bit rubbish... Cyanide and happiness has some good stuff, it's entertaining in a far more banal way than xkcd but has its merits as a webcomic (you'llenjoy if you like the asdf movies)...

Me too... I eventually resorted to a map after a couple of hours.... And technically this is on topic fir the thread, procrastination is a vital part of uni life :-P

My honest, genuine advice would be to not place too much emphasis on Freshers Week. Don't worry if it's not as amazing as it's built up to be. The only real appeal of it is that everything is new, apart from that, once I had settled in and made my friends I've had far far better weeks!

Nice tips, I'll probably do everything on that list.

Question - on my moving in day/weekend I'll not be there (but it's a week before freshers) - will that be a major hindrance to me? I'll be there the day after though as it's my sister's birthday on the Sunday and I'll be moving on the Monday.

I second this! And also don't fall for the hype when Second years try to sell you their books. You can easily borrow it from the library.

If you move in the day later you wont miss anything really. Obviously your flatmates would have already acquainted themselves.
