UKC LGBT Society 2013-2014- Welcome!

Hello there!

The new academic year is approaching! So, whether you’re a budding fresher or a returning member, read ahead to hear about the plans for the University of Kent’s award winning LGBT society for the 2013/14 academic year!

Backlogs of the society’s postings can be found all over The Student Room, as we have always had a significant presence on this site! If you are interested in older threads, here is one of our longest threads that also has links with even older ones: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/show....php?t=1608946

Firstly, let me introduce myself. I’m Chris, the new President for the LGBT. From 2010-2012 I served as the society’s secretary, and just took a year abroad out of the University of California, Berkeley. The rest of our new committee, along with myself, are looking forward to all of the new faces that we are going to meet along with the return of our existing members!
As an introduction, the purpose of the LGBT society is to provide a safe social space on campus to allow our members to settle in on campus and to socialise. It’s a great way of meeting other LGBT students when you arrive at university, as there are many people who haven’t had any contact with other LGBT people beforehand. It has always been a caring and open safe space where people can be themselves and feel safe, as well as attending some of the best socials that campus has to offer!

The Society is open to absolutely anyone, and we have many straight members who regularly attend our events, so bring your friends! We have always offered an eclectic mix of events that we will certainly be carrying on into this year. Look out for our regular bar crawls, weekly coffee meets and occasional film nights, and prepare yourselves for our trips to London and Brighton, quizzes and games nights, themed parties and nights out and everything else that we have in store! The first term is going to be packed full of events for all tastes, for those who want to attend every event and for those who prefer a quieter atmosphere. As we get closer to term time, keep your eyes peeled for information about our London clubbing trip that will be taking place in the first term we only have limited spaces!

The society has been able to boast a soaring membership base over the last few years, consistently reaching and pushing over the 100 mark. Our trips to London and Brighton sell out, and our themed nights on campus have reached capacity on several occasions, raising lots of money and recognition for the society. At Brighton Student Pride last year, we won the award for University of the Year for our amazing progress as an LGBT society.

As well as the social society (us!), there is also a separately run LGBT+ Campaign with Kent Union, which holds forums and thought provoking discussions on prominent issues for LGBT+ identifying people. More information about the campaign can be found here:

As usual, the LGBT Society Committee and myself will be present at the Kent Freshers Fayre, where you can sign up to receive our regular society newsletter. However, if you aren’t at Freshers Fayre, you can always contact us using the below details so we can arrange to add you to newsletter to ensure that you don’t miss out! Alternatively, you can always look at our website where we post details of all of our events!
If anyone has any questions, please respond on this thread and the committee and I will be glad to help!
