Re-taking foundation year. Do I still get Maintenance loan?

Hi I'm retaking a foundation year and I'm wondering if that means I am still able to get the maintenance loan (I received the max amount last year).
I'm retaking all modules apart from 2 one of which was only an hour a week for Sept-Dec. (90 of 120 credits)
When I got my letter from student finance it said that the tuition fee would be £9000 (even though I said I'm retaking). When I try to change the tuition loan amount on my student finance application I don't have the option to apply for a grant?
I need the maintenance loan in order to pay for rent, food etc, cannot do the course without it :/
So confused..

Retaking the year is the same as starting a new year so the fees would be the same. There is one thing I think may get in your way. You are retaking the foundation year which means that if you go on to do a 3 year degree after that, you would be requiring 5 years of funding (your failed year, retaken year and 3 year degree). The maximum amount of funding available for any one student is four years, so you would be required to pay for a year yourself. You may be able to do five years with tuition fee loans, but I think you will only be able to ask for four years maintenance

I would recommend you phoning up student finance and explain the situation, see exactly what they can offer you. Good luck, hopefully they will be able to help you.

Thanks for the reply. I'll be able to save up the money to pay for the final year myself.
I'm just not sure how to state I'm retaking the year online as when I try to change the course back to foundation year it just comes up with an error and says I haven't made any changes.
I don't think I am able to retake the modules I passed (which would make the whole finance thing easier) which means that instead of £7.5k my tuition fees are ~£5.5k so I'm not entirely sure if i still qualify for the maintenance loan.
I'll give both my uni and student finance a call tomorrow.. Thanks for the help

Right I see what you mean. It depends on how many hours a week the modules will be, they may fall into full time, if they do it should be OK. If not you may still be able to get at least some maintenance to help. Let us know how it goes , good luck

You need to save quicker if I understand things correctly

Loan for Year 0
Loan for Year 0 repeated

Then you would apply for a 3 Year degree

At that point they would allocate you 2 years worth of funding but this would pay for Year 2 and Year 3

It would be Year 1 that you needed to fund yourself

The other people saying you wont get a loan for all your years are wrong..

I have spoken to student finance the other day about this and they told me it is how ever many years your course is (3 or 4 yrs) + 1 year for retakes.

So as your course was already 4 years you will have 4+1 years. So you will be fine and all your 5 years will be paid for.

It sounds complicated but just ring student finance up and ask, they will explain it you!

That seems kinda odd, I'll have to check that with them.

This would depend on the structure of your course

A 4 year course (including foundation year) would be 4+1-previous study = 5 (all funded)

A 1 year foundation + a 3 year degree (that needs separate application) would give you 3+1-previous study = 3+1-2 = 2 (you would need to fund a year)

As has been suggested, only Student Finance can give you a definitive answer

Yeah its a 4 year course, as in the foundation year is included and once passed you go straight onto the first year

NP

I would still suggest calling SF to double check

I seem to recall that there is a "part-time" issue relating to funding but I think 90/120 units are enough

Yeah I'll give them a call. I get an error whenever I change the tuition fees to below the maximum online for some reason so hopefully they can sort that out as well.

I emailed the head of science and computing and they said
"You should apply to Student Funding England for FULL TIME FUNDING. PART TIME FUNDING is only for those course that have been officially designated and set up as an actual part time course. As you are transferring from course year 2 to course year 2, Student Finance England will view this as a repeat year this means that this will use up your “gift year” but as this is technically your first repeat year you should still get funding for 13/14"
Phew
