Ok so I only got 55% overall in the first year and am now starting to look for placements but I know that most of them only accept a 2:1 or over.

Is there any way I will still be able to get a placement? Has anyone managed to get one with a 2:2 in the first year? If not is it still worth me trying to apply to the placements that ask for a 2:1?

Also do any of your grades from second year count? As I am hoping to get a 2:1 this year

I'm starting first year next month, but was told that the first year grades are very important, mostly because of the highly competitive interview process, and partly because you are representing the university during that year.

Go for it. There is no harm in applying.

The second year can play a crucial part in your overall grade for the degree. Although the dissertation is the main component, do the best you can in other modules to give yourself a better chance of getting a 2.1 or first. Its also worth pinpointing why you have only managed to get an overall 2.2 and develop that too (essay technique, research etc). Talk with an academic advisor maybe
