I was so sure I was going to the university of Sheffield but I missed my conditional offer by a mile and was, of course, rejected. The course I was applying for was Japanese Studies (as I already have some experience with the language and love it,) and not many other unis offer it and if they do, they want the same high grades as Sheffield. I've considered going for other languages too but after calling up, I was told there was no way, not with my grades (CCD opposed to ABB).
I'm considering Modern Languages with UCLAN but I'm not sure if it's right for me and there seems to be little up to date information about the course online.
I'll be calling them later to discuss it because I don't think Sheffield want me, even if I try a different course and other unis that have courses I'm interested in (Leed, Manchester etc) are probably the same... I was waiting to speak to someone from UCAS about the matter but every time I call, I'm put on hold for around 15 minutes and end up giving up.

Does anyone attend UClan or know someone who does? Even better, does anyone do modern languages there? If so, let me know what it's like and if it's worth going for... Otherwise I have no idea what I'm going to do!

They'll be closed for the night now, but tomorrow you might like to call the Student Results Helpline, who can independently advise you on your options. They're on 0800 100 8000 and are less likely to be as busy as UCAS phone lines.

If you're not sure about UCLan, that's probably a good enough reason to not go down that route. Is there something else you'd consider studying? Would you consider resitting your A levels to get the necessary grades for Japanese? Do you have any idea about what you'd like to do career-wise? Could you develop your language skills by going to Japan for a period and then taking a different path?

I got rejected from Sheffield for Japanese and wrangled myself a spot on English and Russian via clearing.

I'd say don't go to any uni worse than Oxford Brookes for Japanese, or you'll really be wasting your time.

I really don't know much about the language department, though a girl I met did French and Spanish at UCLan, It really is a good university. If you're still deciding and what to know anything about UCLan I may be of assistance.
