Does it make a difference if I only use one dumbell at a time so I do 10 raises with right hand followed by 10 raises with left hand etc

Doubt it makes much of a difference unless you struggle with raising both dbs at the same time.

One DB? How much does it weigh?

But yeah you can still do effective lateral raises with one DB if it's an adequate weight.

Using 1 db opens up the possiblity of cheating by laterally flexing the spine.

    Use 2.
