How far do employment history checks go back? I have a solid last 5 years history which includes my degree, college course and a year of work. Before that however I had periods of unemployment and drifted from temporary job to other temporary job before finding stability.

I left school 10 years ago, and employers are asking for a full 10 year history since leaving school. I don't even know what I was doing 7-10 years ago, I have had many, many different jobs. Should I just make up a job at a company who has gone bankrupt to cover that period, e.g Safeways or will this be checked too? How far back will most graduate finance schemes want to check, will they want the full 10 years like this employer? If so I don't think I'll ever get a job
