Hello, I am currently working on my history coursework, which is an independent case study. The case study i have chosen is the American Civil War and my question is "To what extent is the abolition of slavery the main cause of the American Civil War". My teacher told me that I had to include noted historian's opinions, but i cannot find any quotes from noted historians to use.
Can anybody point me in the direction of a number of noted historians, with controversial views on the causes of the civil war?

This isn't my period, but the Cambridge bibliographies tend to be pretty exhaustive. You want section 24; pick anything from there that looks interesting and that you can get hold of.

Noted historians opinions does not necessarily mean a direct quote. Essentially they are expecting you to exercise your ability to select an appropiate bibliography (which is a particularly useful skill), indentify key texts and make sure to mention the main historiographical arguments etc. At undergraduate level you will find that by asking certain questions they are looking for students to excercise all these skills. The chap above has alluded to a great resource and this is a skill required of all researches and historians espcially to be able to identify key themes, arguments and select a well researched bibliography. Again not my area..and of course do not hesitate to research academics and drop them an email to suggest a bibliography opr the books they have written and check their footnotes
