My contribution to this question: racism and tribalism. The first is just irrational and affects cohesion within society and the second prevents what humanity is best at: teamwork and cooperation.

What do you think? Any more?

Ignorance. Until more of the world's population are properly educated, human progress will be stilted to some extent by the likes of those who would protest outside stem cell facilities and the peevish politicians who bend to their will for votes.

    Depends what you're advancing into.

Most likely fear and distrust of technology, and I wouldn't blame people to a certain degree since it brings about as many problems as it saves. But other than that, as long as humans exist they will never get along and thus never cooperate to create something together.

I think it just our brains. Just think how many people, how many societies across the globe spend the vast majority of their time trying to acquire shiny stuff.

Selfishness, example being, 170 billion dollars per year is spent on the cosmetics industry. Probably much more on other similar stuff. To put this in to context ITER fusion reactor needs about 30 billion, the Apollo missions cost 200 billion, the Skylon space plane had a predicted research and development cost of 13 billion and finally James Webb space telescope is 8.8 billion.

All the above minus the Apollo combined can be completed with the money people spend on cosmetics. (By the way national differences are the reason why were are this advanced, if it were not for trying to defeat an enemy by out smarting them we would still be living in caves.)

Lack of funding for science. The total amount spent on NASA (which has brought us nearly 2000 spin off technologies) ever (since 1958) is less than the amount spent on the US military in one year. The proportion of total budget spent on science is similar in most other countries too. The UK spends under 2% of its GDP on science yet 30% of the GDP comes from scientific areas! Ridiculous!

Unfortunately true. Evolution works by letting the weakest die off.
