The Student Room Group

Rough outline for a schizophrenia compare/contrast essay.

I did this for revision today actually, and once i got started it was pretty straight forward.

Do about 10 mins of biological explanations - AO1
Genetics

Family studies

Twins studies

adoption studies

molecular biology (genes)

Biochemical

Dopamine hypothesis

Dopamine role in attention

Antipsychotic drugs

Then 10mins for Psychological AO1

Psychodynamic

Freud - regression to a pre ego state and attempts to regain control

Behavioural - lack of reinforcement for normal behaviour

Cognitive - Caused by making sense of sensory symptoms

Similarities 10mins AO2

Determinist

Quality of research

Success of therapies

The problem of determining cause or effect

Differences - 10mins AO2

Reductionist - psycho is less reductionist

Individual differences - psycho explnations account for these, bio doesn't

Behavioural - more successful in treating type 2 symptoms.

just elaborate on all these points and i think that covers pretty much most things.

You know in similarities you wrote they are reductionist, what do you mean by that? and how would you construct that into a sentence that would warrant the A02 point? sorry! i still cant get my head around writing A02 points and the fact that its a compare and contrast question doesnt help either!! thanks

You could blatently state - "a similarity between biological and psychological explanations is they tend to be determinist. Biological explanations tend to focus on the role of genetics and biochemical factors, which the individual has no control over, and psychological explanations stress the importance of experience and cognition of which, similarly, the individual has no control over."

That is soooo useful! I haven't started revising for PYA5 yet ... I've been soooo bogged down with PYA4, and I still have ICT4 and SOC4 this week. Gosh, this was needed. Thank you sooo much!

Don't forget to add that the bioogical approach does highlight the causes of the disease but some may have genetics that predispose them to the disease. It doesn't neccesarily mean they will have schizophrenia. So both models work together better rather than seperately.
i thought the top bit was good but thesecond bit about the psychological missed out bits too

and Freud is more relevant with the psychological part of phobias isnt it? with Little Hans being firghtened of Horses.

of course the psychological bit missed stuff out, you only have 10 mins to do it in. If you try and cram too much in it ends up being crap. plus i did say it was a ROUGH OUTLINE
I handed that essay in anyhoo and it got marked 29/30... sooo i think its ok.

this is schizophrenia... not anxiety disorders.

Wouldn't it also be good to mention the diathesis stress model as its a combination of bio and psych explanations, so makes a good conclusion note

yeah i have that in my notes actually, i forgot to post it up. Yeah it makes a good conclusion point to stick on the end if uv got time

you know what I am so grateful for all you guys! I really think this site is hopefully going to increase our chances of getting the grades we want! everyones feeding off eachother with different tips etc and somebody always knows the answer, it's like having a special group of classmates who actually know their stuff and work! I certainly feel less confused and alone about psych now anyway!

i love TSR! shame i only found it since the start of Upper 6! could so have done with it in L6.

thanks for the help on compare/contrast. i was stuck for like 10 min trying to think of things!

Where do you guys get your similarities & differences from?! I'm learning from Cardwell & Flanagan's Psychology A2 Dog Textbook and can see no evident similarities/differences (probably just me lol)...also how many explanations are you learning...so far I've learnt for schizophrenia 4 biological (biochemical, viral infection, brain dysfunction & genetic factors) and 3 psychological (psychodynamic, behavioural and cognitive). I've seen sociocultural factors as well though...think it's worth learning them in detail?

Thanks in advance guys!

that book has a compare/contrast for depression.. you can just use the key points for schizo

Thanks! Do the contrast/compare essays generally have the same similarities and differences? I've never learnt the similarities or differences so answering it with this layout should be OK right? How many explanations are you learning as well? Two from biological (genetic & biochemical) and two from psychological (psychodynamic & cognitive)...would this sound OK? So for the question compare & contrast biological & psychological explanations of schizophrenia...would this be OK to you?

1) 10 minutes - 2 psychological explanations (A01 & A02)
2) 10 minutes - 2 biological explanations (A01 & A02)
3) 10 minutes - list of similarities with commentary from Cardwell book (A01 & A02)
4) 10 minutes - list of differences with commentary from Cardwell book (A01 & A02)

Thanks in advance

hehe. you can get a bit too into TSR and then it starts to hinder your academic success!

not seen these compare/contrast essays before, looking good :yy: I probably shouldn't revise seeing as I need a U, but i think i may do an ickle  bio and chem are boring..
