Well, what I mainly used during my first year was just a notebook, folder and pen. I've tried using my laptop and tablet but it can be a hassle organizing notes. Not to mention staring at a screen isn't very helpful when it comes to revision. I had a separate folder for each module and would usually print off lecture notes and annotate/write up notes during lectures.
From experience, I can tell you that a laptop/iPod are way too distracting. Sure, you'll be able to retain some of your sanity during 2-3 hour lectures with these items, but you'll find yourself browsing on Facebook for a good hour, wondering what the hell the lecturer is now rambling on about!

Eraseable pens, eraseable highlighters.
One LARGE/THICK folder, and a few thinner folders.

I always just took a notepad, pens, pencils, highlighters, a thin folder for any notes you do take and any handouts (you can sort them into a bigger folder back at home), any relevant textbook to the class and a snack or two! I took my laptop for the first few weeks, but it just became a pain. Oh, beware of using iPads! My friends and I deemed the Weapons of Mass Distraction, it's oh so tempting to just stop listening and play silently on an app or two
