I just wondered how many people did this, as I have a few questions.

I've been offered a bike from a family friend, and would like to take it to uni with me. I'm doing veterinary nursing at Myerscough and living on campus. Myerscough is in the middle of nowhere, and the public transport isn't that great with the closest bus stop being a mile away...so I've heard. Taxis into town are over £20, and if I'm going on my own, I wont be able to afford it very often!

It doesn't seem like there are any bike lockers or anything, just racks where you use a bike lock, and I'm not 100% sure how much use I will get out of it. I'm just looking for some advice really. Is it worth taking it? How can I protect it from the elements if there are no lockers? If it doesn't get used, it cant be good for it to stand out in all weathers for 6 weeks at a time, surely?

Also, what cycling accessories are essential, what would you recommend, and what can I afford to leave behind?

    Thanks

    Hey,

It'll be very difficult to keep a bike in top shape at uni. If you are leaving it outside then perhaps invest in a bike cover to protect it from the worst of the rain.

You'll need a relatively good lock, and I have one major tip for you- DO NOT LEAVE YOUR LIGHTS ON THE BIKE. They'll likely get stolen. Also, if you can, store it away from major walkways where drunken students might spot it and damage it.

Thanks. I might leave it behind to start with and see how things are on campus. Its a pretty small college/uni. I can always get it a few weeks later.

I was very lucky to get covered storage! I agree, rain and snow will work awful wonders on any bike

This is what I was worried about. I could always get a cover, but there would be no guarantee someone wont do a runner with it, thinking their funny after a night out.
