I wish it was clinically proven, then we could make a stand about exams being a health risk, and we would never have to take them ever again. A world without exams... bliss

Because if we didn't tke exams we wouldn't get jobs and the country would fall apart. What the government should do is just make exams less stressful eg. make us do lots of exams and let us pick the best ones so that everything doesn't ride on a single day.

Yup especially if you're like my friend who thinks getting anything lower than 'A's is defiantely NOT an option. I agree myself that academics is important, getting into uni is important...but keep note that in the unfortunate chance you fail, there is still a life afterwards!!! It's just a matter of getting the strength to pick yourself up.

(Mind you, the stress does keep you going - guess you just need a good balance :P )

I think our system of having offers from unis and then preceding to take your exams is an awful system. You have so much emotional investmant in where you think you're going and then if you dont get the grades, your insurance choice will never compare!! And why do we not do our exams a bit earlier? Because it would be too much work/stress for the examiners- awwwww hear the violins

Personally, I have to have my own little room for exams to help calm me down. I tend to have panic attacks, throw up, have continual headaches. I'm great at handling stress in the rest of life, but it's been hammered into me for the last 18 years that my GCSEs and A levels are the most important things that I will ever do, and will define me as a person for the rest of my life. That I can't handle.

I am personally considering not going to university (despite stupidly high predicted grades), because I'd much rather be a content classroom assistant than spend another 3 years doing tests and then going to work for much much money in the City or something.

hmmm am i the only one who doesnt get stressed out over exams?

Probably; but you can't just get rid of everything that's stressful in life, you wouldn't be able to do much. Working is stressful, so are exams, moving house, having a family, relationships...Just have to learn how to deal with it

No.

Yeah, the examiners having more time to mark before results day would be really difficult for them, I'm sure. Think logically. In order for earlier exams to matter, the start of the school year would have to be at the same time - if it was earlier, we would be in the same situation. So the school year starts at the same time and finishes earlier = less teaching time = more stress = worse exam results = even more stress the next year.

hmmmm..?

Well, stress does help you concentrate in your exams. I've actually been in one or two exams I've just known straight away I was going to pass, so I wasn't stressed at all, and I found it really hard to concentrate on the exam, or even to care about it. I fell asleep in my C1 mock, but then woke up in time to finish it. :p:

I don't either. The first few GCSEs I was slightly anxious the night before and I was thinking how bad I might do or what ever. But then I realized, even if I did completely terrible it really wouldn't matter much at all, I'll still get to do everything I want to in college etc, It'll just set me back a bit, so theres no point worrying.

Plus, if you let yourself get stressed you'll probably end up doing worse than you would of normally.

Im so stressed that ive ended up getting stress induced excema and migranes! I cnat wait for these bloody exams to be over and i can just relax for a while again! I hate having so much riding on these results, my insurance choice uni is just crap!

Reply 14

it's a crash course in life. whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger. you've just got to learn to deal with these things!

i think in some ways stress is good for us.. stimulates our minds and keeps our brains working!!! but i think the amount of stress could be reduced by having less exams at the same time. If it was spread out over period of time, then perhaps people wouldn't be as stressed.

i don't think exams should be dismissed altogether, cus that just makes us lazy and not up for the challenge.. but my younger sister has to do 12 GCSE's next year.. that is ridiculous for a 15/16 yr old dnt ya think????

Ive started getting this pain in my neck just recently. I think thats because ive been hunched over a desk for the past two weeks learning formulas. Last year i had a cold when my exams were on :frown: haha was awful but i still made myself do as much work as i could manage.

I think it probably makes you a stronger person in the end. If youve been through the horror of exams a stressful job with a boss that you despise is probably easier to handle. It teaches you how to concentrate on something important and put everything else aside whilst you just get on with it. Im usually quite lazy, so im sure its doing me good.

(wow that sounded quite responsible and adult-like. haha well proud of myself there )

Exams Have broken me down inside, with what i've gone thorugh then being predicted 3 A's, and colleges offering me 3 A's, I just want to cry and give up every single day.
But I can't.

This is what exasm are about, to seperate those who can and will, from those who can't and won't. However it needs reform, sadly those who simply memorise textbooks, not skills win. It has its issues.

It's intruiging that people are getting stressed over exams like this, yet teaching governing bodies insist exams are getting easier.
