Calling all linguistis,aspiring translators and MA Translation students-please help!

Hey guys,

Which of these unis and courses is best, in your opinion?

MA Applied Translations Studies (UEA)
MA Translation and Interpreting (Swansea)
MA Business Translation with Interpreting/ MA Translation (Surrey)

I'd really appreciate any comments on any of these. Cheers! :smile:

I can't offer views specific to those courses, but deciding between courses I recommend considering the skills you learn in the course and how marketable they are. Some MAs hardly touch on translation software and other technical aspects, which can put graduates at a disadvantage. Another thing is to see how much the degree rests on translating from your L1 into your L2. You rarely have to do this, so IMO focussing on it for 1/4 of your course is a bit of a waste or time that could be spent on something else. Other things to consider are whether you'll do practical modules in groups with people doing the same language combination, or whether it's a big mixed group (IMO the former is preferable), and whether the lecturers specialise in the language pair you'll translate.

BTW - Imperial do a MSc in translation. Looks awesome :teeth: Have you considered it?
Can you tell us more about the MSc in Translation in UCL (used to be in Imperial) ?
It looks like more theoretical and it seems that it focuses only on scientific translation. I might apply but i'm not sure because there is an application fee...

What about MA Business Translation with Interpreting (Surrey) ? anyone?
