I know next to nothing about them, but S&W has been repeatedly recommended countless times on the boards...

I think they're all essentially the same except for Ede & Ravenscroft, which has a somewhat better quality gown, but is also slightly more expensive. (Whether the higher quality is a better buy is questionable: you only need the gown for matriculation and exams, and possibly formal hall if your college wants you to wear a gown.)

But don't worry about the offers, you don't need to decide in advance - just go to one of the shops in 0th week and buy what you need then: you get it for the same price, and you can make sure it fits. You can probably also buy a second-hand gown then. You won't need it until the Saturday of 1st week for matriculation, so you'll have about a fortnight to go buy it after arriving in Oxford.

Shepherd & Woodward are good quality and reasonably priced, plus when I needed to change the size of my hat they were very helpful

my brother works for ede and ravenscroft, i shall have to see if his discount extends to family members...

I went for Walters simply because all 3 who sent information were the same price for the same deal and Walters is on the Turl. I've dealt with them since (college hoody etc, which I then had to take back for a different size) and they're really lovely. Run by an older gentleman - just like Ollivander's in Harry Potter!

For the record, I *hate* my Shepherd and Woodward gown - it's all creased and dusty and despite lots of washing and ironing it never looks any good.

Fortunately, I've been lucky enough to get the chance to buy and wear a fancy gown for next year... probably won't be using S&W though!
