How Posh is Leeds?

What type of students go to leeds? I know this question has probobly been asked a million times before... I'm hopeing Leeds is a proper big mix of north, south, rich, poor, private, state ect ect
I was speaking to someone recently and they seemed to think it was pretty "rah", how far is this true?

Well I was talking to this guy from work who goes to Leeds. He spent most of his first year living in there but moved back home not so long ago because he said that (compared to sheffield) it's a really unfriendly place and he hated it! I really hope thats not true!!

leeds much like the people coming from ther....i.e alan smith, are pretty rough. however, in all cities ther are good and bad areas.
Apparently Leeds has a higher ratio of public school : state school students than the UK average.
Leeds is great! I know quite a few people that go to the uni and they're not 'rah' at all.
Rahs only go to uni to schmooze with other rahs. If you want to be one, schmooze, if you don't, ignore.

It will vary every year i guess but i was surprised with how many southerners there were at leeds this year just gone.

As for "rahs" yeah each house will have some but there are plenty of sound people to make up for them i just found it a culture shock at first with them because i had never experienced them before.

As for it being an unfriendly place that couldnt be further form the truth! For a start sheffield is a **** whole! and people are much more approachable in leeds.

Leeds is no different to any big university eg Sheffield, Manchester etc. There's a mix of everyone.

Yes there always going to be a mix of every one but that doesnt mean one such uni cant have more of the same kind of people than another thus making it different.

i was called a 'rah', (its not true! - i didnt even know what one was lol)

but yeah there's a huge mix of ppl at leeds.. ppl coming from all over.. i mean of my main group u have ppl from kent (me), cambridgeshire, sunderland, cheshire, wales, russia.. it's all pretty mixed.. lol

Leeds is ridiculous for the so called 'rah' people. They are the majority. Working class people are so under represented at Leeds it should be illegal. I go there now and if id have known this i wouldnt have bothered. And whoever called it rough is a moron. You only need to look at the stduent area of Headingley to see just how posh the students are. Students should be skint! They should NOT be living in a hilariously posh suburb drinking in the bars that leeds uni students do. its a subject i feel very strongly about. And me and a group of people have done lots of research into the subject as we are filming a documentary on it. We found one course of 50 students inwhich only 2 people went to a state school! By anyones standards thats shocking. People will no doubt shout me down for saying this but Leeds is not a fair uniersity for all. Its a uni that is made up of a disproportionate number of upper and middle class students. My advice is to go somewhere else if you dont want to put up with the 'rah' students because believe me, Leeds is full of them, and as a result this pushes up the prices of everything, accommodation, taxis, food. You'll have more fun going somewhere else

I agree and disagree with you there. I agree leeds cannot be seen as a rough place and the people who believe this really need to get out and see the rest of the UK! And yes there are a lot of upper class/rich people there. You only have to look in the car parks and you will find all the minis and golfs people are driving!

However saying they push up prices is a little far fetched. Indeed in Headingly there are posh bars and even a star bucks where you find plenty of, as you put it rahs (id much prefer stuck up ****ing ******s) but in the centre of leeds on a night out its fine. The student union isnt cheap i admit but there are plenty of bars and clubs that are cheap! Cheaper than Manchester any way.

I think when you get to university level most Unis are going to have a high amount of upper class/ middle class people because they can afford it more plus they have been better educated.
Posh nosh!

plus they have been better educated.

debatable.

depends what you mean by educated, actually.

completely subjective.

i don't go to a private school and i have had a fantastic education in terms of learning about life and different people and in terms of academics.

I was in a rush before but ok i will elaborate. Firstly i want to point out that i went to a comprehensive high school and college.

If you looked at how many students went on to university from their college most private schools will have a much higher rate continuing with higher education than comphensive schools. Thats not subjective that is a fact. Now this can be down to a number of reasons. One of them being better education. By this i mean they will be in much smaller classes and so each pupil can have more time spent on them. (i met some one at uni who had 20 peole in their whole year!) Also it costs to go private schools and so there are better facilities/ environments to teach in.

If they havnt been better educated then why do more of them go to uni than people from comp schools and why would their families pay ten grand a year or what ever stupid amount it is for their sons/daughters to recieve the same education as you and I!

 very confused here.
Have not met any people i've found irritatingly 'rah' but i suppose that's your own perception and whether you can get along with those people or not.
go to leeds city centre at the weekend and you'll find many people at the other end of the scale!
at every uni there is a mix, just go try to find the people who are like you!

and just to add, there are many cheap houses in leeds, i'm only paying £52 a week.
btw the pubs in headingley are not that expensive, the oak is awesome

I think it is fair.
My friend (private school) and I (state college), both applied to Leeds, for the same course. He has the same grades as me, but I got an offer and he didn't.

thats all true but there are exceptions (i.e. some areas of the countries comprehensive schools are better than some ares of the schools private schools) but i know you were being general so its cool.

anyway, i don't really care how posh a place is, as long there are some people who arent "rah". And as far as i can see there are a lot of people (on this forum alone) who aren't!

That an example of it being unfair! To be honest Leeds as an area does seem like any other areas a mix of living conditions, but doesn't seem that bad (but i'm from Notts so I suppose it wouldn't!). From what i've seen though the university students at Leeds do seem to be posh and was a bit worrying, but you have to take people deeper than face value I suppose.

There should be at least a few people on the same level in such a large pool of people anyway.
I went to a comp, and lots of people from my school went to Leeds. What course is it where there are only 2 state school students? My friends friends seem to mostly come from state schools, and not everyone from a private school is automatically 'posh' anyway.
