The Student Room Group

St Chads

Just wondered if anyone who is at Chad's could please tell me what the rooms are like. I'm aware they are all very different but if someone would be able to tell me what the average shared room is like, and also the average single room, i would be very grateful!

Also I haven't heard from them since they offered me a place in December - as in a letter to confirm that I have accepted them as firm. Is this normal? Will they just contact me after results day?

Thanks

I also have been accepted for Chad's 06 entry and haven't heard from then since they confirmed I had been accepted, appart from getting the open day info.

I went to the open day in march and saw one of the shared rooms, and it looked pretty big. Not huge, but I didn't think that size would be a problem.

Hopefully a current chad's student can give some more specific info.

btw, what course have you been accepted for?

I only got my letter of confirmation from Mildert last week.

I haven't heard anything from Castle yet.

Got a letter from Trevs the other week, basically said to not expect to hear anything further unless I get the grades...

Hey misspiggy and lawless- what subjects are you going to be studying? Grades permitting should be there next Oct for Geography. Went on March open day- stayed in shared room which was massive (at least 4 times average sized student room) and had ensuite shower. Does anyone know how they pair people up for sharing- i.e. do they put people of the same subject together or same interests?

Most colleges send out forms you fill in with your interests, typical bedtime, smoking habits, etc. It's generally not a good idea to lie on these - while you might think putting all sorts of antisocial things on there will get you a single room, it's much more likely to get you paired up with someone who actually does have those habits....

Hey, provided I get AAA this summer I will be studying Law there in Oct

At the march open day I was given a single room which was about average size for a student room. It wasn't ensuite, but there was no shortage of bathroom time, as there was more than one between our floor.

What grades do you need to meet your offer?

I'm going to study Politics providing I get my grades!

AAB- should be fine as am on track for 3 As but I suppose you can never be to sure. What did you think of the open day? I really enjoyed the opportunity to experience bits like the formal meal and sharing a room (which turned out to be great). Look forward to Oct when we actually get to go to uni as opposed to talking about it in the "hopefully" tense.

I also really enjoyed the open day. It was really fun to see the college and meet the people who will be going there.

I only have 1 exam left so I guess its almost already out of my hands, still, cross fingers I don't screw it up

Hi all, I am a current Chad's first year so I'll attempt to answer some questions. It's true that the rooms at Chad's are all very different. They are spread across six houses along the Bailey, No 1, Main College, Lightfoot, Langford, Grads and Ramsey. We have also just bought another house but I can't remember whether that will be ready for 06 freshers or 07. Anyway the rooms vary so much from the smallest double in Main College to the absolutely huge doubles rooms in Langford to the double flat in Ramsey that has its own living room, kitchen, study and ensuite. They do honestly vary so much that I can't relly think of much to say about them that would cover them all. All finalists who live in have single rooms and my estimate would be that about 15-20 out of 100 first-years have a single room. I have a single room and measuring it out now it is about 8 by 6 of my steps wide, much bigger than any other single room I seen at any unversity (also probably one of the biggest first year single rooms at Chad's).

Yep, you won't hear from them till after results day when they will send you lots of infomation including a form to fill in about yourself so they can match you up with a roommate. They try to match up interests but I don't know of anyone who is sharing with someone doing the same subject but that could just be chance.

Any more questions just ask.

It's alright for you, SOME of us didn't get our offers until after the open days and still have 7 exams left:mad:

You won't get any accommodation info from Durham until after A2 results. Seems pointless to sort everything out, and then have 2/3 of the people not coming.

Reply 15

really- I didnt realise 2/3s didnt get in/ chose not to come etc. On open day they said that they had made something like 180 offers for 90 places at Chads- thought that was slightly shocking- what would have happened if everyone actually accepted! What happens if the college receives to many confirmations from UCAS of offers (ie if everyone who has accepted gets their grades)?

Reply 16

I would imagine that 180 offers for 90 places is offers made rather than offers accepted. But it does happen occasionally that departments take in more than they would like to.

Hey people,
Like Mel, I'm hoping to get to Chads to do Geography this year. All the rooms were so different and they all have so much character it doesn't really matter what size they are. It's also really good that you guys have little kitchens dotted around - unusual for catered accomodation.
