Fancy trying a new sport at DMU?

Hey guys,
I just thought with Freshers coming up and all, (hope you're all dead excited/prepared) I thought it'd be a good idea to tell you a bit about our society: DMU Sub Aqua, which entails scuba diving, snorkeling and free-diving.

Uni is such a good chance to do some obscure sports that you wouldn't normally find at your local gym, say: one such sport is ours, and we're a bit of a new society so we're really looking to make our friends and contacts this year!

Leicester might sound to be possibly the worst place to dive, maybe in the world, but we're lucky because not far from here is an old flooded quarry called Stoney Cove which has had some cool stuff sunk into it like planes and cars and submarines and boats, which provide a great home for things like huge pike and carp. It's widely considered to be one of the best inland diving sites in Europe, albeit colder than say, Spain.

This year we're running diving courses from the very beginner course, Open Water, to about as high as you want to go really: we can arrange it. We're working with Stoney Cove Dive School and they've been so generous and given us a really good deal for the club this year, so now is the best time to start diving more than any.

Not going to lie, diving seems to be an expensive sport, especially compared to the conventional sports like hockey and football etc. But diving doesn't secretly and continuously chip away at your pocket over the course of a year, so we're pretty confident that diving is reasonably cheap when thought of this way.

As well as the courses, we're especially looking forward to seeing all your brand new faces during Freshers at Freshers Fair, where you'll see all the sports that DMU has to offer. Around that week we'll be holding try dives at the QE2 Leisure Centre (about 5-10 mins walk from campus) for those who've never experienced weightlessness and breathing underwater. Admittedly, the best wildlife you're going to see in that pool is a slightly hungover fresher, but it's a chance to sample what we love. (Not slightly hungover freshers: diving.)

We're also looking forward to our socials and probably the highlight for the year: Tour,
which is essentially a diving holiday with maybe a dirty pint or two and somebody inevitably requiring the use of a first aid kit.
Last years tour was to Northern Spain and yeah, it was pretty epic. But we are going to try and top that Catalan exoticness this year with something a bit more far flung and a bit warmer, though it was a top destination for seeing morays and rays.

I hope you're all excited to join us this year! It's over-quoted but do work hard and play hard... and start saving small change for your laundry.
