Gap!

How much older than the woman would you say is acceptable for a man to be in a relationship with?? I don't want this to turn into a debate- should women date men 20 years older etc, but just out of curiosity what do you think is normally accepted??

Whats the biggest age gap you personally would think was OK to date??

I'd usually say about max 6 years older- them being 24, but I'm starting to change my mind!

What does everyone else think?? Soz if theres previous threads  !

depends on the actual ages. I mean... a 20 year old with a 40 year old is ok...

but if they stay together... a 50 year old with a 70 year old.. not so good.

It depends on how old you are I think. As you get older, the acceptable age gap becomes a bit larger.

For me personally, at 18, I wouldn't want to go out with anyone older than about 20/21, but it would all depend on the guy really. If a guy is 20 but acts 40 then I'm unlikely to want to be with him, just as a guy can be 25 and be immature for his age. In the end, age is just a number - you should decide whether you like someone before you know how old they are.

Of course though, generally when people are a decent amount older than you they're going to be at a different stage in their lives and may be ready to start a family, etc. It depends on what you both want at that point in your life.

One of my friends (26) is going out with a 53 year old! I know it sounds shocking at first but they have been together for nearly a year now and seem very happy.
Personally, this age gap would be a tiny bit too much for me but then.. i guess you can't choose who you fall for anyway and age surely shouldn't stop you from being happy

I'd have thought 20 with a 40 is worse that 50 with a 70, but thats just me! I suppose like Sq said its just a number and if it feels right thats all that matters.

I remember a previous thread on here where someone said the rule was halve the age of the older person (so the guy in this case) then add seven to see which age was acceptable.

It works with people our age e.g. if the guy was 22, 22 divided by 2 = 11, so add 7 and that's 11+7 = 18. So it's ok for an 18 yr old to go out with a 22 year old. But if you do it with people who are older.... 80 divided by 2 = 40, so add 7 and that's 47. So it's ok for a 47 yr old to go out with an 80 yr old
My sister went out with someone 25 years older:eek:

That's like me going out with a pice of sperm:eek:

But yeah 6 years is fine well like 20 and 26 years old:smile:

And which smart arse came up with that rule?

I'm 17 and happily with a 30 year old, I don't think it's weird, neither of us knew the other's age when we first started talking, but I can see how people would think that is weird...*shrugs*

As the saying goes - age is just a number. I know 14 year olds more mature than 35 year olds...

i just turned 20 and my bf turns 30 in july.. we are very very happy and serious... it all depends on the person. iv had to grow up really quickly so naturally i go for slightly older men because i cant find many guys my age with the same sort of mentality as me... so what ever it comfortable with u

A girl who left our school last year is now going out with a guy who started teaching here when she was in 6th form...he's in his early 30s, but their personalities are really similar and they seem really happy together...

the age gap shouldn't really matter, but unfortunately in this society everything seems to matter :frown:

I wouldn't go more than 4/5 years older and it'd have to be someone amazing for me to go more than a year younger.
The size of the age gap doesn't usually matter, it's all down to the personality of the two people. However, I would only go out with someone/marry someone who was 4-5 years older than me, because otherwise you have conflicting views in a lot of cases, and this is not useful if you want a successful relationship. If a person is much older than the girl, they may have a lot of experience (sex wise and life wise) and this could cause problems if the girl doesn't.

Also if there was a 20 year age gap, lets say a 20 year old and a 40 year old, a 20 year old is likely to want to go out most of the time to clubbing etc. while the 40 year old may wish to stay at home most of the time.

I can beat that. Well, not me personally. I have a 17 year old friend, going out with someone 30 years her senior. (Been going on two years!) It's all a bit wrong if you ask me.
Having said that, I don't think an age gap of 8/10 years is too bad, once you get to about 18. It depends on the maturity of the people involved as to whether they're suited, obviously. Looking at most people's parents that I can think of, there's a gap of 5+ years, but I guess that when you get to that age, its really not as noticeable.
My gran always says that 'Ohh, ladies age quicker, so you want a man a bit older than you'. I haven't told her about the 17 year old with the 47 year old boyfriend. Methinks she wouldn't approve!
