Keloids

I wasnt sure if this went in fashion or health. I think it applies more to this though.
Im planning on getting a new ear piercing (my first apart from my lobes). Im getting a conch piercing I think, but i read that keloids can appear. What is the likelihood of developing these? If anyone has anymore information about them, i would be grateful.

Thanks

isn't keloid a type of scar?

Some people are genetically more likely to get them, and there isn't much you can do about that.

Do read BME as you'll find loads of information there. But basically, as long as you go to a good place and follow all aftercare instructions you stand a good chance of getting them
I've got a couple of keloid scars, one on my elbow where I kept removing a scab (very stupid, but they're always so tempting to scratch), and one on my wrist where my mate put undiluted TCP into a huge cut I had got attempting a stupid skateboard trick and falling off to end up sliding down the road on my wrists very fast (I cannot even stand up so that wasn't the wisest thing to do lol).

But they lose their colour over a long period of time, like mine were dark pinkey/purple to start with, but are now very light pink.

Keloids are actually fairly uncommon. They are raised (sometimes extremely large) scars on the skin that form after a minor injury. For some reason those with black and asian genes are more prone to getting them.

Did you ever have any problems with your lobe piercings? If you did not then you are very unlikely to develop keloids on your conch piercing. The type of piercing you are getting isn't anything to do with developing keloids. In fact a tendency to develop keloids often runs in families, suggesting it is something genetic.

If you were inclined towards getting keloids you would probably have got them when you had your lobes pierced. If you did not get any then I don't think you need to worry.

Ok, thanks for the help. If Juno is still here : have you got a conch piercing? I seem to remember you saying you had quite a few piercings

I'm not that into ear piercings, although I am trying to persuade Mark to get a rook or a snug! I've only had my lobes 6 weeks.

Out of interest..do you want an inner conch piercing or an outer conch piercing? I know people with inner ones, but outer is a bit more unusual.

I'm a big fan of piercings in general but I think I'm in love with my 2 tragus piercings...and my rook!

Did the rook hurt?

(Please answer "no")

Oooooh, and see the last photo here. That's almost what I want to do with my ears! Except I want a BCR dangling down from a flesh tunnel, not upwards into another piercing

Well the rook hurt a little bit, but to be honest it was like all piercings, they are over before they really have time to hurt. It was a slow one to heal and was swollen for quite a while, but it was definitely worth it. I get complimented on it all the time!

Bet Mark would love it once he had it done! I'm also loving the snug, that and a triangle are next on my list.

Mark now thinks a rook is the same as a nose bridge piercing  I think convinving him might take a while...

I sorta have a triangle, but not really. I call it my triangle, but it's not in the normal place. The piercer said it was how he had to position it with my anatomy, but I think he just had no idea what he was doing. But he'd been really great with other piercings, so when he said he knew I believed him. But I love it anyway, and am gonna get a matching pair.
i was just today looking at the keloids on a black guys scalp. it is an odity how rare they are in white people.
mind you, black people get less skin cancers, so it's swings and roundabouts.
It was an inner I was wanting

I had a keloid at the top of my ear after getting it gun pierced, getting infected, getting hit in the ear with a tennis ball and then the wound closing over the earring, resulting in the stud big pulled through the back of the ear.

I then had surgery, the scar was about the size of a peanut and never came back, thank god. Gruesome pix on wiki :puke:
