Sleepless Nights due to Hayfever! Help

Hi, i get really bad hayfever at night for reasons unknown. My eyes gets really red and itchy! I end up going to school with red rabbit eyes (left eye mainly).

I close the windows when i go to sleep to prevent pollen coming in. I take 1 tablet of benadryl plus everyday and im fine during the day! But at night times i sneeze at 2am in the morning uncontrollablly which should be rather pleasant for the people im going to share a room with next week.

Please has anyone else experienced this at night? i havn't slept properly for 3 days! Ive also had this sore throat every since my hayfever started either due to hayfever or benadryl plus. Please help!! Is there anyway to relieve the hayfever symptoms!:frown:

Wash your hair before bed and change your pillow case regulary. I find my hayfever gets worse when i roll on to my tummy and breathe in the stuff off my pillow. If your hair is washed every night it reduces the pollen on your pillow.
what i did was wen to the doctors and had an injection which stops that. If your eyes get really bad there are eye drops you can get from a pharmacist

Ill try pillow change + hair wash as suggested to me! thanks!

Ok also try to avoid touching your eyes. I no it sounds condescending but u really mustn't if u do. Injection is v effective for stopping the eye thing too
Optrex doesnt hurt...its uncomfortable for a few seconds...but it doesnt hurt. See the doctor

you can also get a eye wash- it feels kinda strange at first but i have found that helps for a bit and also gets rid of redness
you could also try a different hayfever tablet as they do vary slightly and you might find one more effective than another

I use Opticrom eye drops - they sting like anything when you first start to use them but after a couple of times it's pain free. I personally find the one a day allergy tablets useless, but I've recently been taking the Benadryl capsules that you can take up to three a day of, and it seems to suit me better. If my hayfever is bad then I take one before bed and I get a better nights sleep. Tbh though if you're suffering that much then go to your GP and see what they can do for you - they can often prescribe stuff thats far better than the things you can buy over the counter.
Use Beconase nasal spray in addition to Benadryl tablets. Eye drops should not sting - may feel slightly uncomfortable for the first few seconds but then you should be fine. Don't know if anyone else has suggested it but Optrex 'eyebaths' are pretty good for soothing really itchy eyes. You basically put a plastic 'bowl' over your eye and wash your eye in the optrex solution until it feels better.
the eye bath thing is a good idea. I use nazelese...talked about it in other hayfever threads. also got from argos of all places an air purifier (makes a lot of noise but you only need it on an hour or two before bed time.
maybe go and see the dr to see if they have anything they can give you? or i'm going to try acupuncture....lots of ppl have told me it's great!!..... lol hope you find something that works!!!

make sure they are using steralised needles! there was a thing about herbal medicine shops not using clean equipment a while back! i wouldn't go for accupuncture myself , its a rip off.

I work in a pharmacy on Saturdays - I'm only 17 so this is by no means professional advice but I hope this helps.
If you want a non-drowsy treatment try tablets containing cetirizine or loratadine. These are non-drowsy antihistamines designed to block the effect of histamines (chemicals released by white blood cells that increase inflammation).
If you want tablets that cause drowsiness (to help you sleep) try chlorphenamine. This is generally considered the more successful allergy relief but it can cause drowsiness so no driving or operating machinery.
Choosing the right product is a matter of trial and error - tablets work better for some than others. If the Benadryl Plus isn't working, don't bother with anything else containing acrivastine - try something else.
Most pharmacies have offers on hayfever relief at the moment so you shouldn't be out of pocket either.
In conjunction with eye drops and throat sweets you should be fine.
However I would strongly urge you to consult your pharmacist - they will be able to help better than I can.
Graces advice is good, but what i find is opening the window helps. My nose tends to get blocked even more when its stuffy.

I cant sleep with a real bad blocked up nose, its to uncomfortable, i find it helps if you use your covers as a large pillow so that your head and shoulders are tilted up, laying on your back with a blcoked nose is a horrible feeling. Also listen to music, it takes your mind off the stuffy nose.

Yeh i've had this especially over the weekend. It's resulted in me waking up in the early hours because my nose is bleeding (i guess from blowing my nose too much in the day) for the past 2 nights/mornings. Last night it was awful, i had to get up and take a zirtek tablet because i was wheezing and coughing and everything, i really couldn't sleep. My eyes and throat are usually fine, it's just my nose. Last night i didn't shower before bed and was outside all day, so that may well be a reason why it was so bad.

Oh i forgot I have a blue inhaler for when I get wheezy too...that's v good!
When you take hayfever medication, watch out for the ones that can cause drowsyness, especialy if you got an exam the same day! I never really noticed feeling drowsy from it, but if it says it can cause it, then best not to take it if you have an exam.

I'm having the same problem with hay fever at night - Not usually itchy eyes, but get a blocked up nose (usually just a single nostril) which is extremely uncomfortable in getting to sleep. Last night I left the window open and woke up several times through the night with a blocked nose - Problem is getting a compromise between keeping the room chilled at night and keeping the pollen out.

I get exactly the same!! Just the one damn nostril, one day it's left, next it's right. So frustrating. At the moment it's my right lmao. I take Centrizine, and i find my eyes are usually ok, however my nose still gets quite blocked up, but it doesn't run and i don't end up sneezing. Just really ghey when you want to breathe :frown: . I bought these nasal strip's the other day so they might help me a bit, don't know if any of you lot have tried them. DOWN WIT HAY FEVER. It is the devil!
Whats up with the 1 nostrill thing? happens to me aswell.

I've used those strips a couple of times and think they do definately help - You can feel that both nostrils are more open so (in theory) reducing any blockages.
