Wisdom Teeth Extraction in the Morning (**URGENT**)

Tomorrow morning I am going to the hospital to have wisdom teeth removed to prepare me for my jaw surgery in the future, my wisdom teeth do not cause any pain and it was quite a sudden thing, I only have wisdom teeth on the bottom but I dont know if that means they wont cut the gums and remove the top? would they?, it seems like and incredibly tight squeeze to acess the back of my upper gum and tug away without knocking that thin bone in my jaw.

Mainly, I want to ask about the drugs for the procedure, will I be given a choice? my letter says I cant eat from 12 at night before, does that guarentee I am being put to sleep? Do you think I will have the option to ask and give them a preference? If Novacaine would remove the pain, I would opt for that. But I have seen mixed opinions, which is annoying. Something either is painful or it is not, I was in NO pain when having regular teeth extracted, does that mean the drugs will remove the pain from my wisdom teeth too? If it is painful and uncomfortable, I would rather be put under, but if the pain is very mild I will just man it out, but mainly WILL I HAVE A CHOICE IN THE MATTER?

As far as I know, there are no strict regulations so you should talk to your surgeon and ask for the preferred method based upon the exact procedure. They can remove the top ones as well but it is usually not done simultaneously, again only as far as I know. The requirement to not eat prior to the procedure indicates full anaesthesia.

My reply is more of a supportive attempt. Be brave, I am sure it will not hurt with all this modern tasty medicine and fancy instruments. Good luck!
It should have been decided at a previous appointment.

I saw the specialist about my wisdom tooth being removed, and after looking at it and taking x-rays he decided the best way of doing it. I was had the IV sedation so I was concious, but I can't remember it! I think I did get a choice of not being sedated at all. I did want to be asleep when it happened but they wouldn't.
Anyway, I don't think I was allowed to eat either, and I imagine you'll be having the same. They very rarely put people to sleep when doing wisdom teeth.

No matter what you take, it will always hurt after the procedure.

Your unlikely to have the choice about whether to go to sleep or not. Usually when having wisdom teeth out before jaw surgery they are impacted and removal is needed to make way for your other teeth when jaw surgery is complete. I was given two different drugs afterwards to reduce the swelling and the pain which was very effective on the pain front.

You may have some choice, but in some cases the choice may be "do it this way or don't have it done." Some wisdom teeth can be removed under local anaesthetic (usually actually lidocaine rather than novocaine); some can be done under local with sedation and some require a general anaesthetic. I'm an anaesthetist, not a dentist, but have done quite a few dental lists including wisdom teeth extractions, and my understanding is that the decision depends on how many need to come out (the top ones may need to be removed even if they haven't erupted through the gum yet), what shape/size they are and what direction they're pointing in. If they're technically difficult to extract, it may not be possible to do it under local, not because of the pain but because of problems with getting access to the area and risks of blood going down your airway, so it's not just a case of being brave! They will usually also inject local while you're asleep so it shouldn't hurt too much when you wake up, but may start to hurt later on as this wears off - you should be given painkillers to take if this happens.

Your dentist should explain everything to you before they do it, so you will have the chance to ask any questions. If you do have a general anaesthetic, you will also see your anaesthetist before they send you off to sleep so you can discuss any concerns with them. Hope it all goes ok!
I had all four removed under a general, I was only out for about twenty minutes. I had too have mine removed due to having had treatment with braces and my wisdom teeth would have ruined the work done. The after effects aren't great.
