Confused by contact lens numbers!
Hi everyone,
I wear contact lenses and want to know exactly what all the numbers etc mean. On my specification it says
Right: 8.7 14.4 -1.75 /-0.75x90
Left: 8.7 14.4 -1.00 /-0.75x90
Can anybody explain to me what these numbers actually mean? And are my eyes average-ly bad, or really bad? Lol!! Sorry to sound so ignorant, just curious.

the 8.7 is the curve of the lens, 14.4 the diameter, the -1.75/-1 are the correction values for your eyes and i dont know what the others are.
i wear focus dailies 8.6,13.8,-3.25!
those numbers in bold do refer to your prescription. I no longer wear my contacts, but my prescription was as follows:
PWR - 2.25/-2.00
BC 8.6
CT 0.100
DIA 13.8
I've found out the following information:
BC / Base Curve (a number between 8.0 and 10.0)
DIA / Diameter (a number between 13.0 and 15.0)
PWR / Sphere / Rx (a number between -20 and +20)
Not sure what CT is however.
Edit: according to wiki, CT stands for centre thickness.

The worst i've seen is -3.75
My left eye is -4.50 an i think my right is -4.75 but i kept them both at -4.50 to stop confusion

you think that's bad. my lenses are -8.00 and -7.5. so its cheaper to have lenses than ultra thinned out glasses!

there normally thickness I think? lol. My lenses on my glasses are mega thick though, have to pay loadsa money to get them thinned so i don't look like a geek
Same here. Both my eyes are -3.50. The normal lenses were not that thick but quite bothersome, so I payed extra for a thinner lens.
Anyway, for my contact lens I wear J&J Acuvue Advance with Hydraclear -3.50 which are perfectly fine, but the current solutions are quite crap. It replaced my old solution (Bausch & Lomb ReNu, which was very good) because of some infection scare.

8.7 is the base curve
14.4 is the diameter
-1.75 is the prescription
-0.75 is the astigmatism (abnormally shaping of the eyeball)
90 is the angle at which the astigmatism is
Don't worry, your prescription isn't very strong, it could be much worse. The worst one I've seen is a -36.00!!!!!

Isn't that blind by then?
It might as well be, but it can be corrected with glasses
