They already did. Back in 1968 with the X-15, they only built 3, well it wasn't NASA, I dont recall who it was, maybe McDonald Douglas, or General Dynamics or Lockheed, McDonald Douglas I think. Anyway the X-15 travelled at speed of around 4,534 mph I think which is about Mach 6.86. Around there anyway I don't recall exactly to be sure.

Yes I know but is the technology only going to be available to USA or all the world? Imagine what this would do to the future of technology and transport.
