LSE full of Chinese

A friend of mine advised me not to apply to LSE because it is full of Chinese people. I don't have a problem with this, but he said that visiting LSE its like going to "China town" with apparently 90% of student chinese.

The problem he said is that LSE doesnt actually provide as greater multi cultural society as they claim. In addition he had a view that Chinese people are really annoying because they are so competitive and hard working. Apparently they are only intersted in their selves and not the university its self.

I treat his opinoins with some caution, but wonder what others at Lse or people who know about Lse think about this.
Are these numbers of Chinese a problem if so what kind of problem?
Should it put me off applying there?

For starters, 60% of LSE's students are international.

Diversity is what makes LSE the most renowned and beautiful academic institutions in the world.. and here is your friend rattling off about how much LSE is dominated by the Chinese? Common sense would tell you that it's trash.

http://www.lse.ac.uk/resources/calendar/statisticsOfStudents/statisticsOfStudentsDomicile.htm

As of 2005:
Number of Chinese students (undergrad + postgrad): 439
Total number of international students (including EU, excluding UK students which make up 40% of the student population: 5439
Total number of students (incuding UK students): 7749 (from http://www.lse.ac.uk/resources/calendar/statisticsOfStudents/statisticsOfStudentsA.htm)

That looks like ~5.5% to me.

This is so rude! I supposed your friend don't have any Chinese friends? Pardon me but i don't see the connection in hardworking = annoying

 I don't think your friend got the statistics quite right. Knogle hits the mark more accurately with the links he provided.

In any case, I can see why your friend finds people who are self-absorbed rather annoying. But you'll find people like that no matter where you choose to go eventually. It's inevitable. Not all Chinese people are like that - they're competitive and hard working, yes, but they take an interest in the university as well.

Being a Chinese myself, I know how most Chinese people can get (especially when it comes to things they treat as competitions, ie. everything in life really :p: - that's us, all right! They have a term for it, "kiasu", which is a Hokkien word that literally means 'scared to lose'), but given the more correct statistics from the LSE website and the fact that there's bound to be people like that everywhere you go, I don't think you should let it worry you too much. After all, that's life. Learn to deal.
Well, I could be wrong, but I believe, uh, diversity is an old, old wooden ship that was used during the Civil War era.

Everyone here has spoken very wisely (good post Jas ). I'll add another fact, simply for the fun of it, but I think it shows just how diverse the LSE is and was : at one time, there were more nations represented on the LSE campus than at the United Nations.
Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a whale's vagina.

LSE does have a number of Chinese students, but they are nice. Believe me, they are very nice. They may be hardworking....... but then very very few students who come to LSE aren't!
The fact that LSE has a number of Asians, and of the Asians the majority are from China, should not deter you from taking up your place @LSE this September.
Some of my closest friends were several Chinese whom I met at LSE

I stongly disagree with your friends opinion that they are self centred. It's soemthing that I would definitely disagree with. At LSE, all nationalities live in harmony and have a cordial relationship with each other.
You are a smelly pirate hooker. Why don't you go back to your home on Whore Island?
Don't let it put you off, but yes, there are a number from China, Hong Kong, Singapore and of Chinese descent. They may well to themselves, individually or as a group, but worst comes to worst, you go to a university that is only 1000 students instead of 2000 (or whatever)

This bit definitely isn't true. Certain conflicts rage everywhere and have some tie to nationality/ethnicity.

Palestine/Israel rages at every campus where people are moderately intelligent and aware of the world.

Unfortunately... the Middle Eastern conflicts must be among the saddest and most pointless.

To be honest, you're looking at the figures very narrowly; I assume the OP means ethnic-Chinese or similar, which would mean the figures for China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, etc., and then there will be a fair few Home students of Chinese parentage and what not.

Perhaps.. I just tend to associate the term 'Chinese' with the traditional definition. Although you certainly have a point about Chinese also coming from other parts of the world like Singapore. You could, however, very easily tell a Singaporean Chinese apart from a Chinese Chinese (...). Easily.
