It depends on where. In Chennai and Tamil Nadu in general, they don't speak any Hindi. In the other states, people usually know Hindi but it's broken so you might not get it immediately. But in Bangalore (<3) a huge amount of people know English so even that will be fine.
Also little advice: in south India you can generally dress more liberally (shorts are cool but no short shorts/skirts). In Bangalore it's completely chill, you can dress as you would at home. It's not uncommon at all here.
Don't bother with that "reputable hotels" crap. For you, the Marriott, Sheraton and stuff would be reputable but here they're just way too expensive for no reason. Always find someone local to recommend you a hotel. We understand that you'll have higher standards so don't worry about a bad recommendation. You can PM me if you're planning on visiting Bangalore, I'd love to help. And you really should come here. There's a reason I've never met anyone, not even a north Indian, who has hated Bangalore
And also what daindian said about public transport isn't necessarily true. Some cities have great public transport, others don't. But he's right in that you'll not be used to it. You'll find it dirty and crowded and whatnot so it's best to just avoid it and go around by auto rickshaws. Taxis are a waste of money.
I've been to Bangalore and stayed in a hotel by the name of The Viceroy (if i remember correctly), and their most expensive room was cheaper than the Marriott's and at least 4 times bigger.
India has so many great little hotels tucked away.
I'll agree, I love going around on auto-rickshaws. I'll never see the reason to get a taxi!

I hate auto rickshaws I have the such a bad experience when I was younger
I'm glad... really a Pakistani but always wondered why there wasn't an Indian thread since the Pakistani thread was booming and India is a big country with many people lol.

You should know!
Us Indians always take a long time to stick together. Most of the time we're arguing with each other. Indians aren't really that united and its been reflected on TSR.

my mum made gulab jamns this week and they were so nice but I couldn't eat much because they're so sweet
Yea I don't usually eat gulab jamuns for the same reason. But the exception is warming it up and having it with Vanilla ice cream extra sweet, but theres something about it that makes me wanna cone back for more!
