49 Reasons Why You Know You Drive A Smart Roadster

I know this is relevant to hardly anybody else, but it made me laugh, all so true

49 Reasons why you know you're a Smart Roadster Driver...

1. You’ve spent the same money on your car as your next door neighbour. He drives a Fiesta/Golf/Clio/Vectra.

2. ...and you get more MPG.

3. ...and MPH!

4. When the quickest road is the back road...

5. You’re driving around with a permanent grin.

6. You speed up when you see a “dangerous bends” sign instead of slowing down.

7. Farmers become accustomed to your exhaust note...

8. The car won't come out of second gear in tunnels.

9. You spend money on upgrades and Mods as if it was a game of Gran Turismo.

10. Leaving your car out of sight for more than half an hour is unthinkable .

11. Driving to and from work is an event within itself. Combine some fast B roads, snaking corners and a bit of sunshine and it feels like Christmas day EVERY DAY.

12. In the bends, you can overtake nearly anything.

13. On the straights, nearly anything can overtake you.

14. When you spend 30 mins doing donuts & handbrake turns on an empty snow-covered IKEA car park at 1.30am when really you should be in bed.

15. Your girlfriend has asked at least once what you would do if you had to decide between her and the Roadster.

16. Driving anything else is an absolute joke. I mean...How inaccurate is the steering? Is there a reason for this high driving position? Why am I leaning so much on a paltry 40 mph bend? Is there a problem with the accelerator cable?

17. You salivate at the sight of a Noble M12 whilst others don’t even know what it is.

18. You cringe when people say "That looks powerful, what size engine has it got?"

19. And frown when they tell you their standard hot hatch has 80 BHP more.

20. What’s the top speed then? OK..enough, enough.

21. You suddenly gain an ability to read the weather better than Michael Fish.

22. You think it's perfectly normal for a modern car to leak.

23. You know every roundabout in town.

24. Wheel scuffs are part and parcel.

25. Only in the last five minutes of any journey will you remember to switch on the stereo.

26. Every child you drive past will point and shout “cool car”.

27. Your mum screams even when you are at half pace.

28. Holidays no longer involve flying.

29. You have Nightmares about having children.

30. You ring your girlfriend and say, “I’m somewhere in the Peak District”.

31. You think it's perfectly reasonable to have a service schedule of 7000 miles.

32. You actually look forward to services as it’s the perfect opportunity to fit modifications.

33. If you hear a sound outside whilst lying in bed, you go out and check on the garage, rather than comforting the wife/gf that the house is not going to be broken into.

34. You suddenly gain the ability to pack suitcases and shopping bags.

35. You lose any requirement you ever had in traffic jams to look at other people in cars, as you know they're already staring at you.

36. You learn to admire the country side a lot more...

37. You think the Roadster is becoming a common car....(when you see two in the same week).

38. When you leave the house without your shoes, wallet, baseball cap and the letters you were going to post...and you only go back to get the hat.

39. When your social life is split 50/50 between driving the car and talking about driving the car.

40. Down the pub the conversation invariably turns to the subject of your car...even if you don’t bring it up.

41. You think a mini is a practical car.

42. You've learned to ignore squeaks and rattles.

43. Car-park attendants commenting, “Nice Porsche”.

44. Motorway is a swear word.

45. as is Ice, Rain, Snow and Straight Road.

46. Tyre marks on every roundabout within a 10 miles radius.

47. Every lunchtime whilst at work you go to see if it is “OK”.

48. You really can’t see what your next car will be that is in a similar price bracket.

49. You think it’s categorically, unquestionably, undoubtedly, 100%, definitely the best purchase you have ever made.

I would point out a few that I really like, but they're all quite good and really quite true.

Back roads - definitely.

So then Lofty, anytime you want to swap cars for the weekend? :flute:
I don't care so much about fast as I do about handling

Haha, well that list is now framed in my bedroom

Right about handling though, there is nothing better than speeding round a corner, seeing the traction control light flicker on, the beack wheels spin out a bit. Ah...... heaven

Fortunately #22 hasn't happened to me yet

Or even better, throw it into a corner and hold a slide, with the only traction control being in the form of your right foot:wink:

You know the Smart Roadster isn *that* fast, right?

I think you may have missed the point of the post....lol. Look at #12 and #13. Its not painfully slow as some people seem to assume it is because it has a small engine though. Tops out at 119mph, although 140 has been reported with an ECU remap
Reply 6
Its comparable to the MX5 - or am I going to get slaughtered for that one
Reply 7

I suppose it's kind of like an MX5, ie: great handling, small engine, small and light car etc etc

But, it dosen't look girlie

OMGWTF

Arguable; excluding the brabus though

Haha thanks walshie  Its the exhaust that does it for you isn't it?

That and the rims with wider arches.
I couldn't ever see myself even remotely getting in a normal Roadster, but the Brabus is a league above the rest. Its just a shame they couldn't have done something more with it. I think it had great potential; being 200hp with a 1.3l engine. In such a small car like that, that would of gone down legendary with hardcore fans.

I love the Brabus, the deepish dish wheels combined with the slightly wider arches looks great
The MX5 has no true rivals. Where else can you get a sports car that handles great, does 0-60 in about 8 seconds for around £15k brand new.
What is a smart roadster like to drive? Whats the performance figures on it? Never really come across one before, they are pretty rare cars. At the end of the day, you can say, I drive a Mercedes Benz!

Yeah they aren't very common, probably because new they are expensive for what they are. Brabus is £18k, although that is top of the range.

Performance isn't great, 0-62.5 in around 10s, top speed of 119mph, more with an ECU remap.

Fuel consumption, i get around 50-60mpg, thats mostly cruising with a little bit of hard driving, but can be a lot less if you drive it hard a lot of the time

They are unique i suppose, 698cc Turbocharged with a Semi-auto gearbox. Well, they are practically the Smart For2 rearranged a bit

Yeah, is a shame. Although they have done that in the US i believe, or planning to. Pretty sure i read something like that

Lofty.

I'd say the Roadster Brabus was a true rival.
The MX5 is, lets face it, a womans car. The cramped cabin is enough to put me off though. Good handling though. But fastest engine to date is the soppy 158hp car; still not enough. At least the TT gave it some welly!

Let me say now, Smart and Mercs are just not even remotely alike lol. Merc are always contemplating selling the Smart due to revenue losses no matter how popular the Smart is like.

Oh no, I get the point, but its just not true. I mean, yeah, it is light, but it's also 650cc. What's that, 0-60 in 9.5 sec - on the Brabus? That list (with one or two possible exceptions) seems to have been written for some piece of Italian exotica.

Ah well, if y'all like roadsters, ignore me. I'm not really a fan of Smart cars. Not when you can buy something called a "car" for about the same price - maybe even less :p:

^ What do you mean its not true - yes it is.
Smarts around the twisties will be hard to pass, and a Smart could easily pass a car with much more power around one.
As for the straights, the MX5 could poop all over it, as could my neighbours Ford Mondeo and any other family hatch
Reply 17
I think any car can beat it over the straight  Could give a Reliant a run for its money though....hmmmm...

Corners are pretty damn good though, theres just no need to slow down

I reckon a *lot* of cars could at least keep up in the twisties, and possibly pass (depending on the driver). Especially an MX5 or a Mondeo...
With regards to your comment about the MX5 being a womans car, well some of the later cars are bought by woman who don't have a clue about cars but just want something that looks nice.
However the majority of Mk1's are owned by blokes who are true car enthusiasts. About the cramped cabin, well its aint! I'm 6 foot and I fit fine, if you were any taller then yes leg space could be a problem but at 6 foot with the seat fully back its no problem at all.
I'm sure that if you gave a mondeo to say, the Stig, he could beat any of us in an MX5 or smart roadster for that matter, it all depends on how far you push it. However, its more about how it makes you feel, and the feel of the steering combined with other things. But one thing I can confirm is giving a decatted MX5 a blast through the revs through a tunnel, well theres not many better sounds your gonna hear than that!
