I know! But I've heard of other courses where people have to come in just for 4 hours.
4 lectures and 4 seminars a week.

That is really good but in terms of coursework how much is it in year 1, 2 and 3 do you have to write a lot of dissertations for business or is it not that much?

In first year where all modules are compulsory there's around one coursework essay for 6 modules and 4 exams.

Second year and third year we get to choose our modules so you have a degree of choice over how much coursework and exams you do. However, I have heard the department wants to introduce compulsory modules for years 2 and 3 so I don't know if that would be enforced for your year group.

In third year you can choose to do a dissertation or 8 modules.

Ok thanks for the clarification. What is the difference between dissertations and coursework? What sort of things do you do for coursework?

And for presentations how many people do you normally have to present in front of if you choose modules that require them I am not really someone who is a confident speaker

Presentations are in front of your seminar class so around 21 people if it's a full class. Attendance levels fall throughout the semester so me and my friends usually choose to present in the final weeks of the semester when only a handful of people come in.

Coursework usually involves an answering an essay question. Essays increase in length each year (starting with 1500 words in first year, 2500 words in second year and 3000 words in third year).

A dissertation is a 10,000 word (I think) report on a original research study you conduct in your final year. It takes the place of two modules if you choose to do it. Otherwise you just do eight modules like the previous years.

Thanks I am going to stick to 8 modules I can never write 10,000 words! How are you finding it so far?

In my final semester now before graduating so it's chaotic. You'll find that semesters fly by as the workload keeps piling on. These have been the fastest three years of my life.

Don't rule out a dissertation just yet. I was put off by the 10,000 word limit but having done a research essay last semester I realised it's really not as hard as it sounds.

So great finding a thread just for Business Management - Reading about those compulsory accounting/statistics modules are scaring me off a tiny bit, I mostly want to study Marketing but as there was no marketing course I opted for Bus Management as I really like Queen Mary. I went on a campus tour last week and it was much better than I was expecting. Bigger and prettier than I thought it would be so I'm feeling pretty confident about firming QM. I'm glad to hear that the levels on those first year modules aren't extremely difficult, I guess its good to get those boring modules out the way in first year and then specialise into marketing in my 2nd and 3rd years…Any thoughts?

The accounting and statistics module in first year is very basic and taught on the basis that students don't have prior mathematical knowledge.

The accounting lecturers in particular are very good. If you follow their lectures and seminars, you'll be fine with it.

There are also lots of marketing type modules to choose from in second and third year if that's where your interests lie.

Google 'Queen Mary term dates'. That will take you to a page with exact start dates for the next three years.

Maths isn't complex at all in first year. One exam I did was following basic formulas but others were just basic graphs (for economics) and doing a basic balance sheet problem (for accounting).

There is no direct percentage weighting for coursework and exams but when I was in first year, I had four exams, one presentation and around seven coursework. But this changes year on year. In second year and third year you can dictate the weighting of coursework and exams to an extent depending on which modules you choose.

How long was the coursework?
