i dont have a clue about ACL reconstruction but good luck!
i friend of mine had this done. i dont think it takes too long before you can at least walk around (with crutches). Will take alot longer before you can start playing sport though. I doubt you´d need to put off uni.
these are just the reccomendations at the hospital where i work, so it could well be different where you are. i would recommend that if there's anything you want to know, you contact the pre-admissions clinic at the hospital where you'll be having the procedure done.

you should be out of hospital within 2-3 days. you'll be referred for physio as an outpatient, although i don't know how long you'll keep going for.

you can return to driving when you are sure that you can safely do an emergency stop. the time does vary, and different consultants will have different lengths of time, so check with your doctor.

usually you can return to work quite soon, but ideally if you do manual work you should wait approximately 3 months

you can start swimming after 6 weeks
jogging after 4 months
golf after 4 months
non-contact sports after 9 months
and contact sports after 12 months

hope that helps, but like as i've said, check with the hospital, because they will know for definite.

Why don't you ask your doctor instead of calling the users of TSR *******s.

i think he was leavinga serious post so was a bit annoyed at someone making a harmless joke. An over-reaction sure, but not one that requires any input from yourself.

I think nursey lass basically said it all. You'll need a brace type thing for a few weeks after the surgery - including wearing it at night for at elast the first week.
The ACL as you are probably aware stabalises your knee. The brace is to help stabilise your leg whilst the ACL is reconstructed. Physiotherapy will be needed in part to help keep your knee from seizing up, but also to exercise your quads. These stabilise the knee in the same way as the ACL, so keeping them strong will take strain off it.

You should be walking around with a crutch within a month or so, but no high impact sports for yonks, and don't be trying to do any drunken piggy backs or aught silly like that!

i had my ACL reconstructed a couple of years ago and recovery was actually quicker than they said, provided you do the physio, I was back playing full contact sports like rugby within about 9-10 months.

Yeah, I've had a couple of friends tear their ACLs. None of them had to put off anything big, except for one who delayed going to university but that was just because she was going to go that school with a full scholarship for soccer and they revoked it.
