well 30 mins on treadmill warm up, then i do the rounds of the weights, then back onto the treadmill for 10mins to cool down, i'm there for around 1hr15mins, should i be there longer? i eat cereal for breakfast usually muesli, then for dinner i have something like spag bol, and later on either some toast or some more cereal.

I don't think it's possible to know, it depends on how much your planning on eating for a start. If you eat tons and tons and exercise loads you'd probably stay the same would you not? when I'm dancing everyday I eat tons and don't lose weight (I just stay the same). I think in order to lose weight especially if you don't weigh that much you have to go hungry. If you exercise a lot you burn cals and are hungry and so you eat more than normal anyway (well I do). You'll have to exercise more and eat the same as before to lose weight I should think.

Consult your doctor.

i don't want to!

Reply 7

Why not? Your doctor will be able to weight you, and tell you your BMI and advise you on an exercise routine to suit you.

Its quite simple really, you have to burn off more calories than you consume to lose weight. Try and add up how many calories you eat in your average day. To lose weight you need to exceed this amount in calories burned. Obviousley, you dont need to burn off all the calories you consume, you need some for basic energy, think its around 2000 a day for a female. Bear in mind that to lose one pound you need to either cut down you intake by 3500 calories, or burn off an extra 3500.

it sounds like i have to go on more cardiac :frown: i eat usually around 1500-1700 kcals a day!

1500-1700 is fine, its within daily guidelines.could you cut it down to 1300/1400? even if its just a few days a week on lower cals? To lose a pound a week you need to burn off 3500 on top of you 1700, if you cut down to 1300 you wouldnt have to burn off as many. do you have some kind of monitor to check how muich you actually burn off at gym?

That is really inaccurate. For a start, you could theoreticall climb Ben Nevis on the energy from one Mars Bar. The fact is, you use an awful lot of calories just be existing. 1 hour of slightly strenuous exercise a day is not going to change your calorie usage that much. It will make you a lot fitter though.

I heard a really cheesy slogan once - fatness is vanity, fitness is sanity. It sort of applies.

The good news is that when you exercise hard, your metabolism is raised for the rest of the day so you can eat more without putting on weight. I would recommend doing circuits - so 10 minutes hard running, one difficult round of weights on lots of different muscle groups, then 10 minutes running again etc. Maybe repeat 3 times? That will get your metabolism up no problem.

well they've given me a plan of what i have to do! but they want me to classes an all, which i don't want to do, so i don't bring anything up with them or they'll make me do aerobics! Soon i'll be going everyday, i really enjoy it's loads of fun!

Im just saying what i have been told at weightwatchers and other places!

Of course you burn off calories by just existing, but to lose a pound of weight, your intake of calories needs to be 3500 less that what you are burning off through 'existing' and through exercise. You can either eat less or move more!

And an hour of excercise will change your calories, i burn off 500 in an hour at the gym.

Weightwatchers = bull****. Its marketing is focused on cynically exploiting middle aged women who want to lose weight. Sorry, it's a stereotype, but it's true. Ultimately, calorie counting is a rather useless pursuit. Losing too much weight too quickly is very unhealthy and is likely to lead to muscles as well as fat being burnt off. The best way to get fit is to exercise hard, and then eat a lot, which is what the OP seems to be doing.

Incidentally, what tell you that you're burning off 500 calories - the running machine? Don't believe it.

im usually there for about an hour, maybe a bit more. If you want to lose weight i would definitely increase the cardio. Is there a cross trainer at your gym? i find that they burn off way more calories than the treadmill (mind you, i cant actually run for long on the treadmill!) and tone up your legs more. I tend to do about 40 mins cardio, 20 mins weights. Apparently, i read somewhere earlier, that to get the best effects you should only do weights/resistance every other day to let your muscles recover. Im not sure how true it is but i think it seems logical really. As someone said earlier, excercisingdoes increase your metabolism so try and keep up with it regularly as you are doing already.

It's a shame i dont practice what i preach very often, then i wouldnt be the fat blob i am!!

The things we go through to lose weight! Keep it up, youre doing well!
