Maybe the chemical is in the battery and will only cause damaging effects if it leaks out onto your skin? Just a suggestion
Yes but still...it is worrying. What if its a faulty product too...it seems suspect. Someone came to the door selling/offloading them.
i take it u live in canada or something?

it won't be harmful as long as you don't mess with it... otherwise it wouldn't be aloud on the market
though you could contact the manufacturer?
and remember most things like batteries contain stuff you don't want anywhere near you! xxx

(in fact... if it was a dodgy door selling thing... id definately check it out!)
Well there is Mercury in electrical stuff and that can cause cancer, but you'd have to dismantle it and swallow it a few times to get it. People get cancer from Mercury by continual consumption, like drinking poisoned water.
No, I live in the UK, which is what makes it even more strange!

I'll use it carefully...we bought two...I had no involvement but one is for me, one is for the office (?)

Its just a bit discouraging when it says it contains a chemical that causes cancer AND birth defects AND other reproductive problems...
does it say what the chemical is?
in theory its probably ok, as you have to have skin contact with the chemical for it to cause a problem, (we use chemicals in chem that are carcinogenic!) however certain chemicals are different....

p.s. tenacious d rock my socks off

I'd do the same. If they were really cheap its not worth the risk imo.

Since when was canada referred to as a state? It says california :P

*edit* bah, you beat me to it, priestess fnord */edit*

It's almost certainly a component in the battery. There are some heavy metals in a lot of recharagable batteries that really arn't that nice to deal with, but they should all be contained within the battery and as such not present any real danger. Still, I would never buy a video camera from a door-to-door salesman, but that's just me. You can get cheapo stuff like that off the net, and then if it's screwed up at least you know you can contact the person you bought it off (assuming you buy it from an established company).
It's lead.

The Simpson's dartboard comes with 6 darts, in which the "brass" grips contain lead. So it has the same warning and advises you to wash your hands after handling them.

apologies, was having a 'blonde' moment. in fact i am having a 'blonde' life, possibly due to the fact i am blonde
(no offence to other blondes intended, im am just your typical dippy blonde!)

Annnyway... was reading an article when i came acroos what i reckon this mystery chemical is. It is an additive called MTBE that was thought to cause cancer which caused california to ban it, however it is not banned in any other countries as this theory has been all but disproven, infact a fuel organisation has suggested that it is improving the air quality (as it is also added to petrol)
