Well if it makes any difference, I'll be going to Durham this October and I'm not particularly sporty. When I was considering Durham I got the impression a lot of sport goes on....but that a lot of other stuff besides that goes on too. A healthy balance I suppose....correct me if I'm wrong...

It can be, but not everyone has to be good at sport to come here.

I am one of the least sporty people in the universe and I cope here fine

Reply 3

Good, I am not a sport-monger either.

I do, however, intend to fully embrace the wonder that is trampolining when I get to Durham

As much as you want it to be. You can never do a second of sport in your entire time there perfectly easily, or you could go and watch sport (college matches etc) very regularly, or you could play for your college, or play for the university if you were that way inclined. I wouldn't worry about it if not, the 92% figure that gets bandied about is actually a clever* fudge^ of the figures rather than a realistic description. The percentage who due regular sport will probably be higher than most universities due to the collegiate intramural stuff, but nowhere near that high.

* not actually that clever
^ it's the percentage who didn't opt out of a charge for sporting facilities that appeared on their first bill at the university when they were confused and new to the place and didn't really know what all the charges were for (not that I'm cynical or anything).

edit: typo

As said above...it seems like lots of people participate in sport...but I doubt they would FORCE you to take part.I'm not very sport(I go jogging every morning but that's about it)...but I hope to get involved with sport in Durham!

I am fully prepared to embrace the joys of Ultimate Frisbee as my sporting effort ....

There is loads of sport at Durham and for some people it's theirlife, especially concerning Rowing, Cricket and Rugby for which Durham is generally considered to be amazing at. However, there's also sport for people who like sport but don't like sport, if that makes sense. i.e. for the less hardcore of us. Ultimate Frisbee is one of those sports, although it has an immense cult following, as is pool, darts, chess. etc etc.

Bottom line is that if you don't wanna do sport you're not frowned upon at all, and if you don't do rugby you're generally liked a bit more anyway :p: .
Hell, if you want to do something active, join the free-fall club and jump out of a plane, I've heard it's immensly cool

I'm definitely interested in participating in stuff like darts, frisbee and pool but I have to say, my talents at the afforementioned are really quite abysmal.

Is there like a special team for mongs? Disassociated from the proper team? I hope so

 I hope there is, that's the team for me!

Yes, certainly at Collingwood some sports go down to an E-team, which you can probably imagine the standard of...

Reply 11

I like the sound of ultimate frisbee  Sounds about my standard. That free-fall club sounds fun too. Is it very expensive to join?

Reply 12

I've heard it's rather perilous!

Sometimes there is, more likely for more popular activities. Mildert football have the infamous mildert galaxy, some of which are even worse than me!!!

Most sports are free I think, within reason (equipment. etc)

Don't buy the sports card, it's a total rip-off, it doesn't get you anything whatsoever. Even if you don't buy it, you can still join all your college's sport teams at no charge greater than anyone else pays. (all clubs will charge a small amount of subs to cover things like balls, boat maintenance, referee fees etc.)

Reply 16

Hmm, I really should start doing some sport.....

Cool thanks for that, I shall not bother. Not that I probably would have anyway but you never know. I remember my friend last year being like wooah I ain't paying for sports! lol

Whilst yeah it's a bit clever, the 92% figure is a statement of the percentage of Durham students who are involved in sport in some way. - And I think it's probably pretty accurate - whether it's someone who plays University football and trains 6 days a week or someone who goes and plays darts once a week in their college bar for their college team - it's all sport (though yes darts and pool are arguable!!), and I personally can't think of many people who aren't involved in some sport at Durham.

But then, not to worry the original poster, yes you can just not do any sport, but I think you'll find it hard not to find SOME sport that you'd actually be interested in taking up
