The Student Room Group

college segragation

At my college which is quite multi-cultural there is such a huge divide between people who use the common rooms (we have 2 due to the size of the student body) Generally black (gangsta/ urban) people use the red common room and white/asian people use the yellow. (more indie, emo) Everyone knows about it but nobody talks about it.
I dont think its neccasarily nefin to do with racism cus durin lessons and evrythin else evry1 mixes and gets on well, i guess its just more to do with similarites with music and fashion and uva stuff, as the white people u get in the red commen room tend to be more into that sorta urban culture while the blak people who go in theyellow room tend to be more in2 the rock culture! but It was a proper shock to me coming from my high school to see how segregated my college really is, it's like everyone's taken a massive step backwards.
does anybody else get this in their college?

Theres 1 chinese person at my college and the rest are white, so no.
Sounds like a very dfamiliar college doesnt happen to be loreto does it lool. i dont really get thte segregation either, being from an asian background and havin a few friensds in the red common room tho i can sorta understand why there is segregation. i think those people just felt more comfortable with people of their own group because they all behaved very similarly and had similar interests. the only logical conclusion i have. i was never involved in the segregation, thank god, i was too different for the asian people.
I think colleges are a microcosm for the real world. Mine boasts about its multiculturalism in prospectuses (85% are non-white British apparently) yet there's total segregation. We don't have common rooms but we have an outside quad and there are certain places that certain groups of people frequent (e.g. My not very PC friend describes one area as 'Istanbul'). It's sad, but more a reflection of society than the college itself being at fault.
Most of the black students in my sixth form don't tend to sit in the common room with the rest of us, they usually stick to their own area in the ICT room. It doesn't make sense to me either because everyone gets on fine in lessons and there are a couple who mix.

Thinking about it when I was at school everyone mixed really well in lessons and lunch time etc But in the 6th form of the same school there are definatly more distinct groups of people that stay in particular areas and the divide is often along racial lines

My college is a bit segregated. All the black students seem to be friends with each other and ignore everyone else... and the same with the Indian students... in lessons they mingle, but they dont make other friends outside of their ethnic groups - its a bit weird really and irritates me because all it does is create an "us and them" thing and breed racism.

The overseas students have got their own common room cause they pay more.

Their foosball table is no where near as good as ours though :p:
I think I'm the only one in my 6th form that isn't english (though I would call myself english too 'cause I've lived in England all my life). So it's not an issue in our 6th form.

Our school is about 98% white british. In my year there is one chinese girl, two black lads and an italian. That's it!!
And it's the same with all the years.

my school is mostly white, but there are a few asians and they tend to stick together. one of my best friends is asian but she still spends a lot of time with the other asian students, because their families all know each other. it is quite noticeable, but its not like they refuse to talk to any of us so no one really cares.

There's a lot of segregation in our common room - different races don't tend to mingle on the social level. I find this odd because (being black and white) I don't really fit into a category (eg. black/gangsta or white/plastic - 6th form is quite odd, not a real reflection of the outside world if you ask me) so I'm in a mixed "fringe group", one of the very few in my school actually...multiculturalism my eye...

my sixt form isnt ethnicity segregated i think we'r all white but we have split into our 2 years in our common room (split by a wall) our head of years hates this and wants to remove the wall but our point is that the two years have never got along well since we were in yr8 and they were yr7 although i only had the 'pleasure' to meet them as yr11!
OMG Is this whole segregation thing in every college, because after reading what some people have said on here, I am starting to have second thoughts about going to college because I am not used to being in an environment where everyone stays with people of their own race and I wouldn't want to be.

In my 6th form is exactly the same. The main canteen/common room is divided. Nearly all the black people are at the bottom, the white group in the left corner and the asain people at the back. And in the middle are those who mix. Theres also a back room which was dubbed the Black room but now is taken over by the rockers.

I dont think its to do with racisim as like most of you have said all the races mix during lessons. Most people who assimilate in these groups also have friends of different races but for some reason once everyone gets into the common room the drift into their own areas. Its pretty strange:confused:

You should certainly not get that idea as my Sixth Form is quite well integrated. I would not worry whatsoever; you should look forward to College and a fresh start!

i think segregation in institutions is everywhere. My old school was mainly black(about 99%,lol), there was just a few non-blacks which you could count.thats from yr 7 to yr12.the latinos mixed with the blacks but the whites did not.i think just one white did(but only when its football time).one other white bloke didnt talk to anyone, he was always on the computer.
At college now, its a bit multiracial.the races are in groups, lol.but we do tend to mix most of the time and its friendly.the whites(girls) dont tend to mix that much and keep things to themselves, possibly because of different interests.then again when it comes to football, all the boys from different races come together.we even play inter-racial tournament and its fun.Theres always some kind of racial rivalry but its all jokes.
