Start date for 2014 entrants

Hello all!

I have a place confirmed to study Automotive Engineering in 2014.
I just have a couple of questions that I hope somebody can answer!

I'm currently working, and have to submit my notice to leave very far in advance.
My plan is to leave work as late as possible... So I need to work out the first day that I actually need to arrive at the Uni.

My UCAS tells me it's the 1st of Oct (which is a Wednesday??)
I phoned the engineering department... They told me that the course is likely to start on the 29th of Sept, but people normally arrive a week before this date. They didn't really give a definite answer..

I'm guessing it will be the same as this year, so could somebody please tell me what date I will need to show up next year?

I'm guessing freshers week is the week before the course start date? I heard that it goes on for 2 weeks at Loughborough, is that the case?

___

As for my second question...

I have a place to study Auto Engineering, however I may be able to switch to Mechanical Engineering if i choose to...

I am massively interested in cars and motorbikes (which is why I applied for Auto), however I am a bit concerned that my career prospects will be narrower doing Auto, as opposed to Mechanical.. Is this the case?
I'd really like to hear from somebody who has studied either, or even from somebody who has some idea about the differences between the two schools.

Thanks a lot!

It all depends on which hall you're in. A third of all freshers move in on the Tuesday before the first Monday of lectures and the same goes for the following Wednesday and Thursday. So it'll either be the 23rd, 24th or 25th September in your case. Freshers week in Loughborough starts when you arrive and carries on into the first week of lectures (you don't really learn anything new in this week) and, again depending on your hall, may carry on into the first few days of the second week.

I'm afraid I don't know anything about transferring from Auto to Mech. All I know is that they're different departments, so you won't be able to transfer directly once you've started the course without starting afresh on the new course. I believe the Auto course is still IMechE accredited, so it won't be like you won't be taken seriously as a Mechanical Engineer.

Great, that clears up the first question. =)

Thanks for your input on the different courses as well. I'd still like to hear anybody else's views on the differences between Automotive and Mechanical engineering if possible!

Cheers.

I want to apply for Mech Eng this year too (2014)
The advice I can give you is that you should definitely go for Mechanical Engineering.
It covers most/all aspects of engineering, meaning your prospects are a lot wider. You can also specialise into automotive/cars/bikes/whatever after.

Going for automotive engineering is a real risk because it is not really a thriving industry at the moment and is way too risky.

Mechanical Engineering - You can get a job in a lot more countries, and jobs will come to you much more easily.
