there must be something bad about sheffield?

all of my mates are constantly telling me things which are bad about the universities they will be going to in september... i cant say anything cos i honestly have heard nothing bad about sheffield... this of course is a good thing. but is there nothing at all which gets you a little irritated?

i have seriously heard nothing bad about the university or the place? ive heard some things about the bad rep of hallam (i dont know if they're true) but nothing about uni of sheff.

so come on people, what haven't i heard about, name things that have annoyed you about your uni experience so far???

i just dont want to have any massive shocks when i get there...

take it easy

Not really about the uni...but the sheer number of tramps in the area I live in REALLY irritates me, along with the cost of my accommodation - but even that isn't uni's fault
The hills.

They do get you fit, but damn they are a bitch on a Monday night in the winter time after a 6 PM finish !
How bout the weather does it rain alot? Im from near manchester so ... comparatively speaking?

the hills are annoying, and at the weekend the freaks come out along west street and in town (where all the bars are), so Friday and Saturday nights are times to be carefull (i nearly got mugged one friday night along west street). Not usually a problem if your in a group of people, or you go to the union ... (most good nights out are midweek anyway) ...

Sheffield as a whole is really safe - like any city you get your incidents but these, and especially against students are rare.

If you pay too much attention to the local media around Sheffield, you might get the impression that bad things are happening, but it tends to be focused on one main part of the city called the Manor, which is no where near the city centre, nor any of the student areas.

the difference is in alot of other cities the stories are about students actually getting mugged.
sheffield is great in terms of safety - you're always going to get incidents like mine no matter where you are ... just to clarify what happened:

was about 6.30pm on a friday night, i was walking from the forge to west st, to catch a cab. I had 2 bags, and was carrying a box (a cd turntable), i was taking my DJ gear to a gig ... just before west street there were some pissed chavs, and one saw the box and started shouting at me "gimme that computer" - he basically followed me for about 30 or so seconds shouting at me, asking for the turntable ... i just ignored him as best i could, and eventually (proabably because of the amount of people around) gave up and just cursed at me a few times ... it scared the crap out of me at the time, but in any other place, that turntable would be gone ... again, this is only a problem you MAY (if you are in the minorty and unlucky) encounter on a friday/saturday night in sheffield. Just be sensible and go withsomeone else and you'll be fine ... ive walked home from crooks/town so many times at 2/3am on my own and thats the only incident ever to happen to me ...

on the whole - i feel really safe in sheffield ...

i did feel really safe when i went there on the open day... that could be quite scary because your holding all that stuff so you cant even defend yourself.... it good that nothing happened though..

I don't think its possible for anywhere to rain as much as it does in Manchester.

Sheffield's not too bad weatherwise and it quite often goes for fairly long periods without any significant rain, though when it does rain it tends to do so on and off for several days.

Haha....what!? There was one point in January where I swear I hadn't actually seen the sun for about a month.

It's not so much the rain.....more the dreary, grey days that make you want to stay in bed - day after day....it gets you down after a while. Where I live in the South it's never that bad :p: Still, in spring the weather is nice in Sheffield

in Sheffield it snows more than it rains.

(well it seems like it does)

This may be a really stupid question, but I've never lived with much rain before, and when I have I've always had a car - which I won't have in Sheffield. What do you to prevent getting drenched when you have to walk from home to uni or somewhere in the rain? What sort of clothes do you wear? I know umbrellas would help, but my lower legs still get drenched when I'm using an umbrella.
I'm afraid you'll just have to make do with an umbrella, you can get bigger ones that are a bit better, apart from wearing waterproof trousers over your bottoms not much you can do lol. Don't wear any jeans that touch the floor, they soak up the water and you get a lovely wet patch all along the bottom =)
I don't think i have ever seen anybody wearing waterproof trousers to uni lol. Just wear a longish coat and take an umbrella, you will get used to it after a while.
