Haven't read the whole thread so sorry if I repeat.

We should remember that not putting chemicals in our bodies isn't the only reason to buy organic food. By not killing off all the insects which feed on crops we are leaving food for birds and other wildlife living in our countryside. It's important to see the bigger picture and realise that if we don't make an effort to preserve our wildlife then we won't have any. Organic farming helps to preserve our countryside, nature takes care of itself if you don't interfer with it. This is why the hunting ban is a joke, we probably kill more foxes by depriving them of foods lower down the food chain than we do hunting them (obviously it was about cruelty as well but I think taking away something's food source is fairly cruel too).

but the food we grow replaces natural habitat and allowing pests to eat the crop means an unnatural increase in that kind of pest, which in turn will change the rest of the food chain. its not natural any way you look at it.

Organic food is an absolute waste of money, for example, the conditions that animals of an organic nature are subjected to are almost identical to those which are not.

Also, there are still chemicals put into organic produce, its impossible not to otherwise your food would arrive spoiled or eaten, thats the whole point of using chemicals in the first place.

As for the chemicals used on foods - the amount of these chemicals found in the food we eat is so so small that it has absolutely no effect on our bodies.

Complete waste of time. The proper stuff is bigger, tastes better and is cheaper. The organic stuff is smaller, less tasty, takes longer to grow and is more expensive.

EXPLAIN IT!

I think 99.9% of consumers have no ****ing clue about the most basic aspects of biology relevant to the issue of organic food, pesticides, GM, etc.

Whats a gene? Well.. its to do with inheriting things I think, "gene pool" yea... erm... but anyway, modifying it must be BADCORE! WE AM GET MUTANT DOOM!11two

And even worse, fear of "chemicals" oh noes! CHEMICALS eww, I don't want to eat "chemicals"

This thread will go on fruitlessly debating with such strong arguments as "LOL IT DOESNT MAKE A DIFFERENCE", countered effectively by "OMFG IT SO DOES, I WONT EAT THAT ****!". And blanket inclusion of every point of difference between organic food and conventionally grown. After all, its just nasty chemicals and weird sciency stuff, thats about as detailed as we can get!!!

How about someone find ANYTHING remotely resembling evidence for your claims?

hey i used the gcse biology i could remember 3 years down the line and quoted new scientist. do i at least get an gold star for effort?

EVERYTHING is a chemical. Water is a chemical. What a stupid thing to say.

Organic food is the most horrendous con in the country.

Organic food is actually a hell of a lot better than normal food. It's actually grown in better soil (fact) so has more of the nutrients in it that it's supposed to, and the lack of man-made chemicals in it allow better uptake of those nutrients in the gut.

So there!!

Can you provide some numerical comparison of nutrients in organic and conventionally-grown food? Its not worth much without actually specifying the nutrients and their comparative amounts.

What artificial chems inhibit nutrient absorption? By how much?

Generally speaking, organic food isn't worth the extra money. There are exceptions, and to me, this is most prevalent with chocolate.Purchase a bar of galaxy, or cadburys, and compare it with a bar of green & blacks. you'll see what i mean!

What I believe is most important is buying local. This generally means avoiding supermarkets when you are purchasing fruit & veg or meat. Go to your local greengrocer or butcher for it, is my advice anyway.

"No pesticides on our food!" It boasts.

Right, so I presume there must be pests.

I'd rather eat something scientifically clean thanks.

It tastes better. It really does.

Taste test - organic tomatoes and ordinary tomatoes, both from the same shop. Blindfold, you can totally tell the difference.

Don't be thick. It's not got any pests. that's why it costs so much - they destroy crops touched by pests.

You pay for the quality you get, mess about with nature and there are consequences. I'd rather pay for better food thanks.

And narb -- no chemicals are added to organic food! doh!

Reply 53

Preparing food is not 'messing with nature'. Destroying crops is a waste. And pests are not always widespread and detectable.

They can't test long term though, only guess. what about very long term? I.e genetic mutations in years to come?

Yes, plants can spontaneously mutate, years after you have digested them! Mwahahahaha!

It's hard to believe people can be so dense.

Yes, I know and appreciate there may be long term effects though

its worth it, but you would save a hell of a lot of money by growing the veg yourself. potatos are piss easy to grow,as are tomatos......etc etc
