My mother used to take Yoga classes.

But the church we go to told her it was dangerous to cleanse your mind in such a way because you run the risk of letting SATAN enter your soul.

So be careful.

i did yoga for abit a few years ago. Didnt really notice much difference apart from being more flexible!
Yoga is too 'slow' for me, I've always preferred stuff like aerobics or jogging

I do Yoga one day a week, it's not much to notice differences straight away but I use it to give my muscles a chance to heal from my other workouts. You can do a type of 'fast' yoga, more like pilates in my opinion... but some like it.

I have noticed that I relax easier now and it has given me more flexability, I use weights anyway so I have not noticed a specific change in muscle tone through yoga. I think you should go for it there is nothing to loose. Or perhaps if you didn't want to go to a class you could get a DVD workout.
Although I must admit there are a few hotties in the class. The trouble is being some guy who does yoga probably doesn't exactly make the girls excited...

If you do the right stuff and for the right amount of time then you should start to become more flexible. I leave feeling very relaxed and at peace (without sounding too cheesy) and as its not that vigourous, i dont tend to come out feeling like ive done a major workout. It si nice and relaxing and calming i guess if you want better words!

I'm a guy.. and i'm proud to admit that I do Iyengar Yoga.

There are so many benefits to it.

Improves posture,
Improves form at the gym,
Makes me more flexible for the sports that I do
IF you know your yoga you can find several ways to stretch each individual muscle in your body which is great for aches and pains.
It really relaxes you.

Yoga is not a replacement to real exercise though, it is a supplement to it.

Still continue with your cardio and weights as yoga will not increase strength.

You will not achieve muscle tone through yoga alone.

Thanks for the info  I wasn't planning on replacing other exercise with yoga, I just thought it would be interesting to try something new instead of just gymming constantly, I don't have a very big attention span!

Don't try Hatha Yoga If you don't have much patience, start with Iyengar for a few months and If you really want to add some speed to your yoga and keep yourself interested then progress to Ashtanga (sometimes reffered to as "power yoga")

Squirly - if you give it chance you will enjoy it, and it should really relax you.

I'm really clueless about all the types, but my gym offers two classes - 'Yoga' and 'Dynamic Yoga' - anyone got a clue which would be better?

I think youwould notice more from doing Pilates, but it might be a step up from Yoga, I'm not too sure about it all really.

The only reason I'm looking to do yoga instead of pilates is because pilates at my gym is an 8 week course that you pay for altogether and if I don't like it I'm down quite a bit of money. I want to be able to do it as and when I choose.

There is alot of different types of yoga around, some that are more meditative and some that make you work very hard. If you have a short attention span maybe try astanga or that dynamic yoga you have at your gym.

Over a long period of time yoga will tone your muscles up as well but at first you will notice improvement in flexibility and your posture. I personally enjoy yoga because it makes me relaxed and helps my breathing and makes me more conscious of my body movements.

Try it out - you might really enjoy it!
I'm doing yogalates at the mo, so not excatly yoga but still, it's really enjoyable. I'd say pilates is probably more strenuous, yogas all about relaxation and making your body more supple.

OT but I got a resistance band with my yogalates dvd and it's the most fun ever! Everyone should have one =D

Not if she's a beginner.

If she goes in and trys ashtanga she will never do yoga again and hate it. Ashtanga is a very advanced form of yoga. You need to be at least an Intermediate at Iyengar to get anything from it.
