I play the violin (grade 6) & the Piano (Grade 8). i play lead second violin in the Kwazulu Natal Youth Orchestra (i live in South africa). Its such fun being lead-you get to look posh & boss the entire section around. hey, we're playing Shubert's Unfinished Symphony. Has anyone played it before-its quite hard!

It's really good, better than the violin I reckon (no offence). You could probably adapt pretty well to it if you play violin but you'd have to learn alto clef.

I'd find a specialist viola teacher if I were you, I've found that teachers who teach two instruments can be pretty rubbish

umm i don't think so! (traditional violin - viola rivalry starting again! ) seriously tho, the viola can be a bit harder, since it's a larger instrument, u have to learn a different clef, and u rarely ever get melodies, which means ur stuck playing harmonies

plus the fact that u get NO respect for playing viola

Tell me about it! It's funny the way viola players crawl out from the woodwork though... I was playing in a concert last night, some random piece in which one movement required five violas, and there were easily five viola players from amongst the singers (myself included) even though it's a tiny choir!!

nobody wants to admit to such a degrading skill only when amongst your viola friends are you truly safe to discuss viola music

having said that, I played in a concert last week - we played a viola concerto! did sound pretty good!

I play cello, roughly grade 7-8, but to be honest I've let it slide since coming to Cambridge. We played Schubert's Unfinished in county youth orchestra a while ago, it's gorgeous.

I should carry on with my cello, but I'm not good enough for any of the main orchestras in Cambridge.

Know the feeling, the conductor of one of my choirs is like that. He takes regular trips to some obscure archive in Sweden, gets the original manuscripts then transcribes them!!!

    eek!

u wonder HOW these conductors find out about such composers .... they must have a conductor's league, where they spend their holidays digging up obscure archives, which they put into a pool!

Lol, well my conductor is a music scholar, he's a complete genius (can be very impatient though ), was a professor at the Royal Academy for 30 years or something. So naturally, he seems to think that run-of-the-mill composers like Mozart aren't good enough!!
