Aw...poor you :frown: That must feel terrifying - but I think it's just your brain playing tricks on you. I believe you are experiencing something called hypnagogia. It's a strange state which occurs just before going to sleep or waking up, and seems so vivid and real...one of the most common symptoms of it is fear, as you described, and sufferers also describe a weight pressing down on them and a "presence", as you also mentioned. Don't worry - it's not uncommon - about 40% of people experience it once or twice in their lives.

It's very hard to explain what it is - because no one really knows what dreaming is. But basically it's due to something happening in your brainwaves just before they change to sleep mode - and it can be very scary. I would imagine that during your period, the fact that your hormone levels are different, your body temperature is higher and you have deeper sleeps could contribute to your hypnagogia.

Try this for more information:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnogogia

I'm sorry this is causing you so much distress - maybe perhaps now you have a bit of insight into what may be happening to you, it'll be slightly easier to deal with. Of course, I'm not a doctor, so cannot diagnose you, but it does seem likely that you are experiencing hypnogogia.

Feel free to PM me if you have another hypnogogic experience, or just want to talk - I'm here

This wikipedia article is really good. I didn't know I was doing so much lucid dreaming. or at least I didn't know that was what it was. Before I go to sleep, I often feel as though I'm being rocked like a baby. And I often dream that during the night I wake up and loose a needle in the blankets, but when I wake up in the morning, I realise it never happenned. But sometimes it feels so real. I've never felt too scared though. Must be a pain.
On the other hand, when you wake up in the morning and you feel as though you've been waking up all night (even if you didn't), it's just very tiring.

It could be Sleep Paralysis as i get the symptoms you get as well (apart from the kiss on the neck). Paralysed, couldnt move, couldnt breathe, pressure on chest and hearing things, sometimes hallucinations as well.....and freaking out.

Glad I could help
Yeah we studied this in psychology... in the middle ages and stuff people thought it was demons visiting in your sleep... they painted pictures and everything! It's to do with your brain waves when you enter REM sleep

woOt @ my psychology knowledge!

Ywiss really said it all I think

Thanks for your rep - that was really kind of you
I used to think im mentle and no one else experiences it. Its pretty irritating when u want to call someone or scream, u cant do it !
Thats awful :frown:

I had a nightmare last night for the first time in years and it felt so real that when I woke up I opened my door so it wasn't dark and didn't go back to sleep for ages. I even text my boyfriend at 3 in the morning telling him how freaked out I was. I'm almost 20 which sounds ridiculous but anything concerning something that feels so real that isn't is just horrid!

Yea, it's all pretty much been said here. Hypnagogia or sleep paralysis, but most likely the first. And don't worry, you're not alone, there's plenty of people who have experiences similar to you. I remember my first time when I was about 7 and it scared the hell out of me. Although the sleep paralysis doesn't bother me too much and nightmares I enjoy afterwards. Strange I know..
Ah, its happened to me in the past. Strange, weird but an interesting experience. I've heard that it can get quite bad though with people actually seeing their dreams whilst they are awake in a sort of hallucination. That would be frightening.

I'm blatently going to get scared when I turn the light out and then induce something like this on myself because I've been thinking about it:s:

Am I the only one to whom this has never happened? What does it feel like?

The thing that the OP was talking about feels exactly like someone is around and they touch you. The only difference is that you have a heightened sense of terror / doom and thus the whole thing becomes scarier when you realise nobody is there.

The sleep paralysis is what it says. Complete paralysis. You have no control over yourelf at all even to the extent of breathing or blinking. If you have never experienced that try and imagine a complete dead arm or something like if you have slept on it. When you try to move it nothing happens and the tingling sensation hasn't started yet. Sort of like that.

The strange forces are kinda freaky. The only way to explain it is how it has already been explained. It feels like you are spinning around, being streched, hovering, sliding up the walls etc. This is (in my experience) the most common one and also to an extent controllable - either to induce it and make it happen or to stop the sensation.
Hmmm, I'm sure I knew someone who had a very similar problem tto use, she actually tried natrual rememdies like armomatherapy, homeopathy to help relax her she usually had someone go to her hous a hour or so before she went to bed and she found it really effective she also drank herbal teas as well

It sounds absolutely terrifying. And do you wake up after it happens? What happens next?

well,i cant wake up coz it isnt a nightmare. so aftr it happens i experience adrenaline overdose (heavy breathin, sweatin, heartbeat rate increased etc) n then..i stay up n pray to god that it never happens again... coz it makes me feel so freaked n helpless..
