    Hi all,

I was a Biosciences student when i was 20, failed the first year of uni due to voluntarily caring for a relative, now the relative is no longer a concern and i am considering returning to uni.

But i have had a gap from any institutions / educational training or employment. So what would i do for a reference???

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Regards,

    Radagast.

You can usually go back to your old sixth form/college and ask for another reference. Some keep the files for a few years or they might remember you. I think that is your best bet.

Other references might include your boss from work if you did any paid work?

If you have done any paid/voluntary work, you could use someone from there to give you a reference. You could also get in touch with someone from college/6th form/uni to see if they would still do you one. If the worst comes to the worst, you could also get someone to give you a personal reference- for example a family friend.

    Hi SilverstarDj and Emma,

    Thanks for your reply,

I was considering the college one myself but it has been nearly 6 years, you think they would still give me a reference from that long ago?

As for the work reference i only did summer work between school / college / uni and was not there for a long amount of time, last place i went to and asked for a referance was where i worked in summer 2009 and they said sorry we dont keep records for past employees and the manager had moved post.

I have found being a voluntary carer has isolated my network for references.

    Regards,

    Radagast.
